Scrap Steel in Charlotte?

I am having a difficult time finding a place to buy some scrap steel in Charlotte.

I need like 6" x 36" of 3/16" steel plate for a little high lift jack mount. I found Howard Steel, and they can probably get what I need, but they are not what I am looking for long term (other projects). Are there any steel yards around here?

Any suggestions?

I searched all over Google and read through 5 pages of "steel" threads on here, but didn't have much luck for the Charlotte area.

Foils on 49 above Harrisburg, see Tim in resale. Sure there are others, it's just closest to me.

x3 on Foils. They have a ton of stuff, and I always enjoy looking through the aluminum section as well.

Looks like lots of thumbs up for Foils. While it may be my best bet material wise, mapquest says 42 minutes from my house.

Any other places or suggestions?

Yeah, not to sound like a broken record, but heres another vote for Foils. Many scrap places will sell you metal, but these guys are just better at it. They just built a new building in the last year or so to house their "resale" portion of the business, and it's a nice set up. They'll sell you scrap steel by the pound or short sections of new steel, whereas places like Howard only want to sell you whole sticks.

For scrap probly no more than 10 bucks for the size your looking for. New I can't remember for sure what that size flat bar runs for but it might be around 20 or 30 bucks if even that much.

Look around for the scrap pieces, it's cheaper than if he cuts it off a new piece. Also, he had a stack of flat plate down towards the auto recycler in, some bent, some straight, different thickeness's for awhile. Cheaper to buy the whole piece and then cut out what you want most the time. He'll usually send his "south of the border" friend to fetch it for 'ya in the bobcat.

M-Thurs close at 4:30 I think, Friday close at 11:30, Sat close at 11:30

Try to avoid Sat because it's busy with people selling scrap and the driveway gets backed up.

Tell Tim "Scott in the black Jeep" say's - get to work!

Braxton I don't think I'd drive from Morgaton though, there's got to be a scrapyard close to you, your gas bill would negate the drive. Unless you got somebody around here to pick it up for you.

Thats what I was thinking. I'm in charlotte and north Charlotte enough though, if it's got some decent pieces of steel and decent prices it would probably be worth the trip. Thanks for the info for sure. I'm always down for a a trip to the scrapyard. :D
