Looking to make a few extra bucks I was thinking about trying to find junk cars and scraping them. Does anyone know the rules for scraping one? Like do I have to drain the motor, remove the interior, or even take out the glass? Also what kind of prices are people getting for scrap right now and does anybody know of a place close to Columbia that does scraping?

Thanks!!!

you do not have to do any of that stuff. just take the car in as is. i asked a guy at carolina salvage in rock hill about titles. he says you do not have to have a title but you get more for it if you do. regular metal price 2 weeks ago was 7 cents a pound. so you have to find a car real cheap to make money. If there is any other metals like aluminum parts maybe take them in separate. Aluminum was 44 cents 2 weeks ago. definitely take the catalic converter in separate!

The place in Mtn City I take stuff to makes you remove the tank, drain all fluids and remove the battery. $10-12 per hundred right now. As for regular scrap in bulk it depends on where you go. We are cleaning out the shop in Deep Gap right now and have a load to take. Usually just roll across the scales and they do it based on the difference between your weigh in and weigh out.

$10-12 sounds great!! Think I might give a few local scrap yards a call then start the search...

Every place is completely different. The place in Clayton (Can't remember name off hand) will NOT accept a vehicle with out a title. That's the only place I know of that does that? I had to drag an old van chassis to TT&E in Garner from down there back in the Summer. Every one I've been to wants the fluids out and battery removed but they give you cash for the battery itself. Foss's in Durham just started letting you leave the tires on but that's depending on who's running the show that day. Nothing else, loosen all the lugs and take them off when you get there. TT&E you MUST remove the gas tanks and bust them up. Foss's you have to just drill 2 holes in it but you can leave them on. The price seems to vary greatly right now for auto recycling. TT&E is $7 as of yesterday. I've heard metal is bringing a much better price in western NC right now.
Remember to pull the copper / brass cores and such if you got the time to sell seperately and make a little more. Plus there's items such as plate aluminum (trim). And you get alot more for #1 being any steel that is clean and less than 4' in length. Cast items that are easy to pluck such as headers and such are #1. And lastly, don't forget about the catalatic converters...

This is the big thing. You can take a car to scrap like it sits and get the bottom price, or you can take a day and strip and sort and probably double your money. And the less crap there is, like glass and carpet etc, the better price you get at some places.
