This sucks pretty hard. I had a bunch of work today. First, Shane (scarface) came over to trade me a TJ tub for a bedliner for his Tundra. Then Kevin (kcarroll) came over and brought me some stuff to line if I got the time.

We all hung out while I sprayed the Tundra, then another guy came over and dropped off his TJ to get an interior liner.

Well, while doing the Tundra my back was getting a bit tight. It stayed tight while I worked, and then I started in on the TJ. Big thanks to the guys for helping be start on the TJ, I couldn't have done it without you in my state.

Well, halfway through the TJ, I stood up and hammered my back on the rollcage. That was it, I couldn't stand up straight. I managed to get the TJ done through the pain, and luckily enough the guy was nice and let me keep it overnight so my back could get some time to heal a bit.

I need a mechanical back. That would be awesome. Maybe I could get one that would let me jump like 10' in the air. That would be cool. :huggy:

Flexaril & vicodin.

damn near a cureall for my back when it acts up.

Yeah I have a bad lower back from weightlifting in high school. I have always said when they have a full back replacement surgery I will have it done.

they have artificial disk replacements now. thats the important stuff anyway.

insurance wont cover it and i need about seven of them lol. oh yeah..not to mention the years of work i would miss because you cant do them all at once.

plus....for the ones in the upper back they wanna go in through your throat (thats with any type if upper spinal surgery fusing bones, cleaning out ruptured disks etc..) and im just not comfortable with the doc opening up my throat and reaching all the way to the back to do his work.

Yeah Im not to sure I want the Doctor doing that through my throat either....I didn't know they had artificial disk replacement. I have two that are worn out pretty good and I didn't know insurance didn't cover it......What kind of cost is associated with the surgery....Im sure its pretty hefty.

I think that's pretty cool, really. Why make a new hole when there's already a big one there? Ever seen teh tools they do it with? Super super small.
Same idea as something as "simple" as laproscopic hernia repair, they get to the insides throug ha tiny ass hole, recovery is soooo much better

I has something really weird happen that hasn't happened before.

I went out to grab some stuff from the driveway and when I bent down a bit (I was already hunched from the pain) I had three REALLY big pains in my back, to the point I yelled and almost fell to my knees.

Then, the pain was gone, I could stand up and walk around. I even cleaned up all my supplies and my spray guns and stuff and then I even mowed the grass.

VERY weird. It's still a bit tender, but not as bad anymore!

That's the crap mine was doing after moving a old 36" tv by myself.
:(
Stupid muscle spasms. Mine was part overuse, and part something was out of alignment.
Good luck, few things suck more than back pain.

Sounds like you had pinched a nerve.
Doctor wanted to do surgery on my back when I was 28. I told him that medicine is a practice & he wouldn't be practicing on me. When I can't get out of bed then I'll be back. That was 10 years ago.

My first experience with back issues was 25 years ago, tearing down a show for (Cinderella &) David Lee Roth in Savannah. Bent over (incorrectly) to pickup some railing bolts... after lowering 2-3 dozen 400# bass bins (they weren't even connected!) without enough bodies touching them. Couple pops, intense pain, and almost blacked out. Spent the next 4-5 days laying in the living room floor unable to stand ("bathroom" was a large salad bowl :shaking:).

Had a couple "flare ups" over the years (more so when I was humping HEAVY junk like stage equipment, 55gal drums (550#+), and various equipment I've serviced.

Since that time, I've got VERY good at correct lifting procedures! Another thing to work on is "core" strength. IOW, the majority of folks I know with "bad backs" are also on the heavy side for their build (overweight) & most likely have a decent "beer belly". A bud of mine was on HD pain killers for a bad disc and after dropping a bunch of weight/ab work, doesn't even need to a Tylenol for it after 7-8 years. The crux is poor ab muscles allowing the "baby gut" to pull the lower spine out of alignment... reduce the load & strengthen the muscles and it'll go away. "Non-training beer" (high calorie micro-brews, IPAs specifically) have been my downfall, but I'm down 15# since the holidays and feeling much better!

I'm with you on the surgery... 20 more years and they may be in a position where I'll allow the cutting!

That is like pez candies from those little dispensers for me any more. Morphine has been the one that takes the edge off.

Had my first surgery through my neck about four years ago now. I would do it again in a heartbeat. My throat was more sore than my neck was. They removed the disc replaced with a donor bone fused it together and then plated and pinned it all as well. When you weigh the risks I perfer going through the throat. Going in through the back heightens the risk of spinal cord injury.

Nothing small about the hole they create LOL. I have roughly a 5 inch slit/scar on my neck from my surgery. I tell everyone it was from a bar fight though LOL.

I had 7 herniated discs all together. They removed ad fused one in my neck. They also did a partial disc removal in my lower back just over 2 years ago. I just turned 32 BTW. Back pain is no joke at all.

Do everything you can before surgery. I tried everything before my surgeries. it was to the point that it was taking me 20-30 minutes to just roll out of bed and crawl to the bathroom. I was to the point of no other choice. traction, Physical therapy, Chiropractor, anything before the surgeries. Surgeries can't be reversed for the most part. Good luck with your back pain and let me know if you have any questions. I am always willing to help/tell my story if it might help.

GMCJimmy88,

How is your flexibility and range of motion? and was all your trouble upper spine related or throughout the length of it?

Yeah, surgery is the last option for me. My back has only given out twice, this time it just got really stiff and hurting, but tolerable. I think it was something different this time.

The first time it gave out I was at lunch at work and got stuck on the floor at Radio Shack. I was with a friend at work, so he helped me into my car, I dropped him off at work, then proceeded to crawl into my house and spend all day on the dining room floor with a bottle of Hydrocodone. My wife was on rotation at the time and I had no way to reach her, so I just laid there.

The next time I had my son and we went over to have lunch with my wife. That morning I was pulling a rollcage out of a Camaro I was working on and tweaked it a bit. When I got back in the truck after lunch, it gave out and I knew there was no way I could do anything with my son the rest of the day. I drove right to my parents' house where my 80 year old grandfather came out and carried me in and put me on the couch. That was pretty funny right there.

I'm going through this too. I have 2 ruptured discs in my lower back. I've tried the physical therapy and workouts. Those have just been band-aids for me. It always comes back.

Recently, I've been taking steriod shots in my back. I've had 2 so far and they've been working great. You can only have 3 per year and I'm on my second now. I go in for my third at the beginning of May.

Back pain is no joke and I feel sorry for anyone who has to go through it. The worst part is I'm only 30, 6'3" tall and weigh around 210 max. Maybe genetics got me but I don't know.

GMCJimmy88,

My Range of motion in my neck has decreased about 15% maybe. The time I notice it the most is backing up in my car. I can't turn to see where I am going. I just rely on the mirrors. I lost a little more range in my lower back. My hands started going numb alot and that is how the 7 herniated disks were found. After my neck surgery we started trying different things for the lower back. I need to drop some weight which would help but the pills I am on has side effects of weight gain, muscle weakness, and ironically BACK PAIN!!.

I spend most days in terrible pain in my back, they tell me its a slipped disc and sciatic nerve. I had a night where one of my coworkers had to put my feet in the jeep cause I was so bad off. Got the shots, got the drugs, doc was giving em out like candy and I was taking them. One day he had me sign a piece of paper saying I would not "doctor shop" and see any other doctor for prescriptions, which I wasn;t doing. I was freaked out. Now I just suffer...and its pretty uncomfortable to down right bad depending on the day
