So apparently we've had some folks breaking into cars in our neighborhood.

I"m looking at security cameras for a few points around our house and yard..

What do I look for in a security system? What to get, what not to get??

I really don't want to get into a monthly subscription.....

Thoughts??

I have a Lorex 4-camera system and my parents have an 8-camera system. I really have no complaints and you don’t have any subscriptions and doesn’t even have to be hooked up to a network of you dont want to. I don’t have anything except a hotspot at our house so not running off a network was a big selling point for me.

Arlos are hard to beat. 1 week rolling cloud storage, motion activated, battery powered and wireless. A you gotta do is charge em and stick em within 200ft of the base station.

I agree. I love what my Arlo Pro 4's can do. I just don't love the Customer service. My 3 cameras I bought in May had a frimware update malfunction. Took until a week ago to get them all replaced..... But the cameras I love.

I just out 2 Arlo's up in our house they are working great. The new ones require no base station only the subscription (and the old base stations are out of stock everywhere it seems)

In the garage I run my own video security server but if I had to do it again I would run arlos everywhere I think, but the synology stuff has more customization I can do

I put some Arlo Cameras up about a year ago and received tons of false notifications when the sun hit them just right in the winter around lunch time. I found a lot of people had the same problem commenting online and it was apparently due to the way Arlo senses motion.

I returned them and am going to be buying a 4 camera system from either Reolink or Lorex. Much higher video quality, they have mobile apps to view footage, and they also store footage on a hard drive that I can view if my WiFi or internet were to go down. Arlo, Ring, etc are all WiFi cameras. Without internet or WiFi they don’t work.

I have had good luck with the Blink XT2 cameras. I get about a year per set of batteries, the night time video isnt super clear would be my biggest complaint.

Google Nest. We have five of them around our house/property. I can view on my phone.

This can be problematic, but I found a slight tweak to the angle solved it for me.

They can record directly to USB hard drive or SD card (depending on system), and since mine has a standalone base, it will work without WiFi.

How much is the subscription? That seems dumb, because I refused to go with anything that had a subscription. The base station has a much better range than standard wifi routers. I have one camera at about 275ft from the base, and it streams/records well.

Mine is $10/month unlimited cameras. I have 3 cameras on it now. I have been researching the base station to have a place other than the cloud for the recordings.

Yeah 3 bucks each or 10 for as many as you want.

I have thought about the base station for the same reason, but doubt I will spend more on this
