It all started this morning. I was heading to work when I heard a slight "BOOM" followed by a sound that I will not even attempt to describe in efforts to not give anyone here potential nightmares

The very first thing I thought was "Well sh*t"... then instantly followed by "That sounds like a nasty exhaust leak!" I honestly dismissed that thought cause I knew an exhaust would be too easy to diagnose considering every issue with this truck has been fixing all the retarded riggings of the goofball kid who had it before me....ALL OF WHICH WERE LONG AND DRAWN OUT DIAG ISSUES.

Luckily, I was only 2-3 miles from home so I went back to the house and apprehended the wifes Jeep. As hard as it was, I just parked it and went to work knowing that once the diagnosis process had started I would not make it to work on time.

Now for the good stuff which is pretty self explanitory...I started investigating when I got home and within 20 minutes I found that the exhaust pipe had indeed come off. I was relieved. This will be easy to fix and wont cost anything!! I felt for a brief second that in a twisted way I got lucky!

I was wrong.

HAS ANYONE EVER SEEN THIS HAPPEN?!? If so, what might your theory be in answering the simple question..

HOW IN THE F*#KING HELL DID THAT HAPPEN?!?

As you can see, the exhaust pipe has completely been cut off from the lip that mates to the exhaust port on the turbo. I couldnt get a good shot of the existing pipe behind the turbo, but you get the point.

by the way i dont know why my computer posted the same thread twice...sorry bout that

Yep. Poorly welded stainless will oxidize on the back side and become brittle. It may look pretty on the front, but what you can't see looks like crap. Eventually, it will crack at the weld and come apart. Once it starts, it's just going to rip. This is very common with cheap exhaust systems, like the one this kid likely put on your truck. Damn diesel boy racers! Anyway, a lot of them are made in China and are not properly back-purged when welded. Stick with a quality brand when you replace it and you should be fine.

Yep back purging is important plus I see lots of stainless exhaust welded with no filler which basically takes 2 pieces of .065 and thins the joint between them to paper. If the joint isn't a perfect fit then failure is pretty much a guarantee eventually.

Sent from the MarsFab Off Road mobile response unit.

may have been a little loose & the engine vibration played a roll along with the weld quality. I have seen bigger shit than that break over resonance vibration..

Also may want to check your exhaust and motor mounts. Seen that happen plenty of times on the fleet of internationals I used to babysit. Diesel vibration + too much weight/movement on that down pipe and it will eventually fail. The weld is the weak point though, never seen a solid (formed pipe and flange vs. welded) down pipe fail like that.

could be worse, A friend of mine had a turbo that broke the mounting flange off. seems it was supporting the entire exhaust system. except for the fancy stupid huge tip on the end.

well i really appreciate the replys. i know it is really no THAT big of a deal but whenever something breaks i always expect for the worse and hope for the best...but in this case i really didnt know what to think! i honestly was pissed at first...but i just laughed once i got it taken apart. thanks for all the ideas guys!

missing exhaust hangers or system not properly neutralized. seen this before.
