Selling a car with a personalized license plate

If you sell a car private party that has a personalized license plate, can you transfer that plate to a different car? What if you don’t have the new car yet?

That was my thought as well, dang

Though it wasn't a personalized tag, I transferred one from a truck I sold to momma's new Grand Cherokee. There was about 3 weeks between the sale of the truck to the purchase of the Grand. I just let my insurance agent know and they told me just don't cancel the insurance on the tag.

This is often the issue. If you stop the insurance, it kills the tag. BTDT, had to get a new tag.
