Septic Woes & Insulation

There was an nice vapor barrier down when the house was new. It has since rotted away. It was over the original dirt and then cover with sand. Very clean and very dry under the house. A new barrier wouldn't hurt at all.

The car port shares the roofline with the house but it is open. there is no insulation in the open area. Just insulation in the closed in space. Attic access in the carport area.

Okay, if it's still a carport that's open to the exterior, the attic over that space doesn't need to be insulated. You just need to make sure that interior heated space is separated from exterior unheated space.

i think im getting this right the attic space is open between the carport and the rest of the house. if thats the case id frame a wall in the attic with an access door and add insulation.

If you do decide to put insulation in it is cheaper to hire a company to just provide the insulation and them install it than it is for you to go to home Depot and buy it and you put it in.

I think bob vila said something about that.

Right now I'm looking at going sealed crawl space.

Attic is unheated. Doesn't need to be insulated from the outdoors. The indoors needs to be insulated from the outdoors.

That's crazy high. Get some plastic down on the dirt asap. Look for threads on here by moldman and mac5005 if you need specifics.

That's what the previous owners of my house did. There's blown fiberglass two feet deep all around the attic hatch, then none 20 feet away.

Guess I should've added find a reputable company....
Or just make sure to see the measuring strips stapled up in the rafters and go back and look when they are done.

Let me know if you need any crawlspace work/advice.

I’ll be glad to help any way we can.

I'm going to take some measurements and some pictures and share them with you and maybe guide me in a good direction. Is there any thing specific you would need to see to base your opinion on what I need to do?

Pictures of the crawlspace, specifically of floor joists, dirt floor, the access door, also is dryer vented outside the house, any openings from crawlspace to non conditioned porches, and the crawlspace sq footage.

Is there a furnace/airhandler in crawlspace?

Also look for any soil erosion marks showing a sign of water intrusion or not. They will be obvious and look like sand wash at the beach.

Feel free to text/call/email me.

On this topic, if the crawlspace is part dirt, part concrete floor, do you just put the barrier over the dirt or concrete too?

Over the dirt and concrete. Concrete is permeable and moisture will wick and move through it. When trying to dry the air with a dehumidifier, the moisture will continue to come through the slab.

It helps to take a stiff bristle brush and sweep all debris from slab before covering with plastic.
