I'm about to service the atlas in my race jeep, but had a question. It is an atlas 2.0, do I have to drain the transmission fluid to take this thing off? I've never had it off before, and wasn't quite sure of the process.

Kind of learning as I go, just trying to prepare if I'm about to make a big mess or not. I think it may need a gear or two replaced.

It's mated to a 4l80 transmission.

I think what he is talking about is will trans fluid leak out the back of a 4L80 once the case is removed so he can have his Atlas rebuilt.
I am pretty sure the rear output seal will keep most of the fluid in, unlike older GM transmissions where you'd get a red bath upon t case removal.

OK. that's what I thought but wanted to make sure.

2.0 has sealed output for sure. That said, I'd park slightly nose down if possible to be sure.

A buddy of mine told me he had to drain his whole trans when he pulled his 2.0, didn't sound right to me, so I was hopping maybe someone here had mated one of these to a 4l80.

Here are a couple of photos of the connection-

It may leak a little bit out but it shouldn't be tons. Like Ron said, I'd get it nose down if possible.
