I'm working on fixing a YJ for a friend. He wants to replace the ghetto shackles with a decent set. This isn't really an off road Jeep, more of a mall crawler. Do I need boomerang shackle or will straight be fine?

Thoughts?

Semi ignorant question:
Doesn't changing shackle length alter pinion angle or just doesn't change it much because the distance from shackle to the axle?

Yes, and the caster angle changes too. If you install shackles that are significantly longer than stock, it can cause wandering problems and general poor handling.

That, and with front shackles it always sucks because the steering will push the axle side to side more. I know they have panhard bars, but still.

Anything over a 1.5 lift is obscene. You net roughly half the extended length. 1.5. Lift is 3 inch over stock and approaching hideous. I like the shackles to be welded up with a cross bar at that lenght mandatory. I prefer anything over stock have them with a crossbar or through bolt. Not huge on drilled zerk designs either, just a liberal coat of antisieze.

As a note never understood folks spending huge dollars on them, unless they where cut for the boomerang design. Revolver shackles are kinda mechanically neat. Rear application only and sorta been goofy looking.....but not white ghetto, plowing corn, with old boosted Camaro suspension goofy, and made out of erector set stamp metal.
