Shipping tires I get.. how about 1 unmounted tire?

It seems there is a bunch of info around on ways to ship pallets of tires cheaply, but I have a need to ship only 1 unmounted 33" tire from NJ to NC.

The usual suspects are asking $65. I can't imagine palletizing is less than that, but an unbreakable, stackable package doesn't need it's own footprint in the truck. Anyone know something I don't? That quote is for commercial addresses and everything.

I just had a pair of mounted, balanced, and filled tires show up a couple of days ago. They were in cardboard boxes and shipped UPS.

I have also had them come in bare tire with a shipping label on the side.

No idea on cost.

bikeflights.com

I ship large packages through them almost weekly. Granted most of the shipments are bikes, but they have a ton of preset options or you can enter your own dimensions. They ship through FedEx and their rates are ALWAYS cheaper than FedEx....still not sure how that works.

For example, I can send a bike box (51"x9"x27" - 30lbs) from here (Chattanooga) to Seattle for $85 going through my fedex account, or just last week spent $54 using bikeflights.com

I just did a quick check and got a range of $27-42, depending on how tightly you can get it boxed, or at least covered in cardboard. Check it out.

Stretch wrap it, slap a label on its ass, and send it out if the door. The weight is going to be the biggest factor here. Stretch wrap makes a good surface to keep it clean for easy handling and a good place to stick a label to.

The only set I've ever had shipped came individual and unwrapped. They only thing the shipper did was stick a label on it and put clear tape over said label

I've had many sets shipped to me stretch wrapped with fiber/nylon strapping holding the stack together. Tire Rack usually ships that way. My coworker had a set shipped direct to a local installer, who sliced a sidewall unwrapping the stack, and then claimed it came that way (of course). That was fun to sort out. That's one reason I get them shipped directly to me for delivery inspection and unwrapping and then take them to the mounter myself.

Sorry, got off on a tangent there.

I had ordered mine from 4 wheel parts. They came to my house via ups or fedex (can't remember). I do remember they all didn't show at the same time. This was back in 2007 when I first moved to Boone. There wasn't a 4WP near by and the local guys were a rip off.

Just saying that I've gotten them unpalletized and un packaged, the OP should be able to do the same unless something has changed.

I sent stuff to ND back in Jan using greyhound. The paperwork was kind of a hassle but they were way cheaper than anyone else.

This is how my last ones came.

It must cost a fortune to ship them with 30lbs of air in each, damn! o_O My mom has actually said something like that in the past.

Ditto on receiving them w/ just a label on the tire. I just got a set 2 weeks ago form TireRack that way.
They only charged me $60 for all 4 so it can't be much.
Just take it to your local UPS store or Mail Boxes Etc or whatever and ask them.

Yeah, the internet quote says they want more than $60 each to ship them.

I was browsing eBay looking at tire prices and see that there is one trail grappler in my size listed by private party for $30 plus $25 for shipping. One of those carried as a spare, never touched pavement deals.

I'll take a chance on a brand new 33" for 55 bones, so I bought it. Dude emails me a day later saying he used the USPS calculator at 70 lbs, but it actually ended up weighing 71 lbs so that is above their limit. So now it needs to go fedex for $60 and I need to pay the diff. I have no expectation of this guy to ship me the tire at a loss, so I'll pay but it seemed like a high price. I verified on my own he was truthful.

End of the day it's still a full tread 33 MT for $90 so I can't complain that hard.

Ah, for a bigger heavier tire like that it's probably a very different story on the shipping charge. I have only had smaller car tires shipped to me.

There are alot if guys that ship through fastenal. Say is the cheapest way to ship big stuff.

I have had some asked speed coast to coast through forward air but they have limited locations.
