I know the shooting range has been closed for a while now. Does anyone know what the progress is on it? Will the forest reopen it?

It will definitely not be open by the end of this rifle season. The course of action is still undecided. If we can find a good place to move it we might re-locate it. The NRA made some suggestions which require major grading and heavy equipment, but a decision has not been made yet. It is a valuable monetary resource for the UNF and believe me, everybody wants to see it open again.

I'd be interested in hearing what the NRA's reccomendations were. Any idea what the specifics of their plan was?

They recommended the entire rifle range be sloped down range about 10 degrees more. They suggested extending the roof of the shelter much more to prevent people from shooting into the air above the dirt backing. They also suggested shortening the hand gun range to 30 yds. If/when it does re-open, it will only be open when a USFS employee is there.
