I'm looking at a tabletop belt sander and also a hand held. Likely Milwaukee for the handheld but open to suggestion. What have y'all used and liked/disliked?

First thing that came to my mind when I read the title

Metal or wood...or both?

6x48 belt w/12" disc combo unit - spend what you can afford. WE've got a JET at work but im sure the lower cost units would work just fine. Get one with a heavy base.

As for handheld.... I'm a whore for pneumatic units (if you have enough compressor). If you do go pneumatic, don't just buy the most expensive brand/model - I find many lesser-branded units to be great performance (and in some cases appear to be the exact same as tool truck units). Shumake, Neiko, Astro, etc. I do like the IR 302B 1/4" shank right angle grinders.

I'll second @Hurley 's thoughts. I have a 6x48 belt sander and its probably the only tool in my shop I've kept since the beginning in 2007. Irreplaceable tool. Mine doesn't have a disc on the side, but I'd like to have one. I've been keeping an eye on them at auction, but they have gone for too much $$$ or are too far away. An old Delta, Milwaukee, Craftsman, etc is a solid unit. Any of the old made in USA stuff from the 50s-70s.

This thread may have inspired me to track down a Delta one like I've always wanted...

@R Q did you ever find one? This looks to be an old Dayton in in useable condition (belts should be cheap ad easy) and not too far from you:
Some belts and an hour of labor should get you a pretty good machine, and its been listed for over a week, so I bet you could get it for $400 or so.

I moved on evidently lol. That's def a nice one and more like I was thinking when I posted about them. But I'm not in the market for one anymore, got way too much going on with work now! Thanks for thinking of me
