Should have unpacked the steeltoes.....

When I am moving around heavy stuff in my shop I normally wear steeltoes. Of course, I hadn't unpacked that box from the move yet.

I was moving some stuff around the new shop today and I reached over and grabbed an axle shaft and was moving it to a new location and in the process knocked over a cast iron 350 cylinder head I had sitting there. I didn't realize it was falling until it smashed onto my big toe.

My toenail exploded. I immediately pulled off my shoe and my sock was already bloody, I hobbled inside and it soaked my sock and is actually still oozing a bit.

That shit HURT. From now on, ONLY my steeltoes when moving around my heavy stuff!

I have a pic on my phone, but I sure as hell am not walking to the bathroom right now to get it....

OUCH!

My bro-in-law dropped a 25lb plate from 4 feet on his toe once....exploded like a grape.

Hope it feels better bro.

My uncle lost half of his big toe from dropping a motor on it many years ago. His boss had a brand new corvette that he drove my uncle to the hospital in, the whole time telling him not to get blood on his interior.

Good luck healing up.

done this several times when I worked in an auto machine shop with heads I had waiting to be surfaced. Never got hit, but had some close calls. Hope it heals fast, I know it's gonna throb like the dickens for a few days, and then, simple "touches" will drive you crazy. Sorry this happened to you.

They make footwear that isn't steel toe?

I thought for sure this was going to be a story about all those gas cans or something....

Going to post a video of you pulling the nail off with a pair of pliers?

haha my first thought too.

This reminds me - I have never owned any steel toed shoes. My usual shop shoes are an old pair of Rockports that got too worn out to wear to work... now they have holes in the toes... tired of getting surprise welding sparks in my toes o_O
But what I need are some that are really easy to just slip on, like an old pair of shoes, to keep next to the door going out to the garage. I have to take them off and put 'em on every time I come in or out of the house, and honestly I don't want to have to mess w/ laces (hence using old shoes).
Any suggestions?

check out a farm supply store or similar, ( Tractor Supply for instance ) there are several low cost ( less than $150 ) options, you may be surprised how comfortable they can be, enough that you may end up wearing them other places as well.

I've worn out many pairs of Georgia Boot's my job tends to be pretty rough on the toe caps, once the leather is broken thru I have to replace them, so I don't spend a lot when it's on my dime.

Currently sporting a pair of Rocky's, had about 6mos, and they've held up incredibly well.

Man that sucks about your toe. I'm sure it's sore today. Hope it heals quick. I know you said you didn't know it was falling so this doesn't really apply to your situation, but I hate steel toes just for the fact that if you wear them enough you get used to them being there and aren't as cautious about your feet. You get in bad habits of letting heavy stuff hit your feet, or even rest on your toe, and then the one time that you're not wearing steel toes and you forget, you're missing half your toes because you got used to the steel toe being there. I'm glad they finally stopped making us wear them for station boots/shoes at work, and we just have to have them in our turnout boots now.

Grainger sells an over shoe steel toe that reminds me of galoshes from when I was a kid.

I picked up a partially disassembled yota IFS front diff and the long axle shaft slid out and landed on my toe. I know how you feel.

I read this as "Should have unpacked the stilettos". :p

I used to wear steel toes when I worked at Chick Fil A of all places, they came in real handy. They were those Shoes for Crews brand, you could walk over chicken grease with those things and not fall.

I wear steel toes every day and I have for years. I used to wear walmart specials, but once I got a pair of "real" boots, I was hooked! My first pair of slip ons (I will NEVER own laced boots again!) were Redwing "Pecos" boots. The soles were too soft and the metal chips from work would get stuck in them like a sum bitch! My next and current pair are Wolverine "Wellingtons". If you get some good steel toe boots, you'll never notice them being steel toes. I'm also on my feet (usually standing in one spot/area for hours on end) 12-14 hours a day at work and I need something comfortable and these definitely fit the bill! I'm due for another pair any time now. I use KG's toe guard over the toe of the boot and on the back where I kick them off. I may even go around the entire bottom area of the boot next time. It really keeps the outsides from wearing out. In addition to that, I put FOUR coats of Sno-Seal on them to keep the leather from cracking and to make damn sure they're water proof. I'm pretty picky about footwear, especially at close to 200 bucks a pair.

At one of my previous jobs I was able to get a new pair of steeltoes every year. I still have a good pair of Nautilus steeltoes that are extremely comfortable, you can barely tell they are steeltoes like you said.

Which is all the more reason I should have been wearing the bastards.

F*@k steel toe boots. I wear only composite toe safety boots. I spend too much time outside in cold weather, and once the toe caps get cold, you'll never get your feet warm. Also, i can't really wear pull on boots, weak ankles.

And they are a bit lighter, typically stronger, and won't slice your foot as bad if they ever do fail. That's why I like my composite toe boots!
