Does anybody have any home made snorkle, cold air or ram air intakes? Im looking for ideas for a true cold air intake without using a snorkle but I cant come up with anything that doesnt involve running 8 ft of flexible pipe. Has anyone tried a cold air intake package that uses a heat shield but still gets its air from the engine compartment?

Most all cold air kits for trucks use a heat shield and still draw air from inside the engine compartment. And ALL cold air kits are excellent at chugging water if given the slightest chance. Also, using a flex pipe will leave you with a turbulent air path that would likely negate any advantage the cooler air would give you. That being said, I've built quite a few for various vehicles, what is it going on and what type of driving/wheeling do you do with it?

I don't have pics, but on the jeep I used to have with a 4.3 Vortec engine, I used PVC pipe and elbows, mounted a cone style filter to it and attached to fenderwell and used a piece of sheet metal and bent it to act as a heat shield. I had to get a rubber coupler to attach the PVC to the engine intake.

My bros jeep is running a pvc snorkel, currently taken off because a tight trail got the better of it, but u will see the general idea at the meet and greet.

My truck has lost a lot of power over the years due to heavy bumpers, more lift and bigger tires. Im running 33" tires on alluminum wheels (I switched from steel to try help with power). 99% of my driving is on the hgihway. Im about to start a job in Troy and I will be commuting from Greensboro 1.5 hrs both ways, so Im looking for ANYTHING that will help me with a little bit more power for driving on the highway. The truck has trouble holding cruise control at 65mph, and any little hill I come to will slow me way down unless I drop a gear and go to 5k rpms. The little 3.3L only makes 180hp and struggles. I had a dealership do a fuel system/intake service about a year ago and noticed no difference at all. Ive got a flowmaster muffler and dual pipes coming out from the back of it, so Im hoping an intake will help compliment the exhaust. The exhaust is old though, and starting to leak everywhere, that is probably part of my problem.
I do drive in dusty conditions, but high water is no concern because my alternator is about 2 ft directly below the intake and I mske sure I dont sink it past that.

I was looking at this one. What do you think?

That looks as good as anything you could piece together. I pieced together a cold air intake for my ZJ. Seat of the pants seemed to add a little power but still won't hold cruise on any uphill incline. If you really want your power back you should consider re-gearing the axles. I have lots of steel and such on my ZJ and I run 33's as well and I have 4.56's in the axles. with all the wind resistance and weight I wish I'd gone with 4.88's.

Ive got independent front suspension so re-gearing would have to be done in the transfer case, right? I hear that is a PITA.

No you can still regear an ifs front diff. I cant remember which one of the JDM cars the gears from, but you can actually get 5.13's for the front diff on a frontier. Not sure which rear axle you have but I am sure there are plenty of gear sets available with a little research for the nissan. I have a friend in Ca. that has the 5.13 set up in an ifs frontier with 35's and it moves pretty good.
