  • Conserve/Protect The Environment

That's not really a choice, is it? Conservation isn't equivalent to protecting the environment, nor is increasing production antithetical to it.

Yeah, and really, it depends on how you're hoping to change the outcome. If you're all in a wad because you're worried about the polar bears, there's no self-flagellation option up there. If you're concerned about lowering prices in the long term, the answer is "D: A and B".

This might end up going political, no biggie if it does, will just move over to Garage!

I too suspect that you can do both...the underlying goal being more energy / AND be good to our future.

I suspect that will take a combo of more oil / refineries (efficient, etc - S.D. just broke ground on a new one) and more alternative sources.

Oil is really just a short term (100-150 year) solution, renewables or the ability to use electric without the nasty battery issues is prob the long term?

What about opening up NC coast for drilling? Bottom fish love a good tower to hang around. Anybody ever fished Frying Pan Shoals? I suspect an oil rig would provide the equivalent of abundance of bottom fish? But then again, I'd also second guess that an oil rig makes alot of noise and probably shakes the ground down there.
But I say open er up only if NC Residents get a break from it.

On another note, anybody seen where North Dakota is starting to boom from residents striking oil on their land? The main problem they are having is refining it. I heard that oil in the US can be on a hefty waiting list from the 20+ year old refinery bottle neck. More oil coming from home turf will undoubtedly coincide with the need for more refineries. I hear an oil refinery is anything but green...

Is the "ban" on new refineries lifted? IIRC, after Katrina, I remember hearing that the refineries are all running at 100%, and any failure affects supply (and therefore costs)

My $.02 is that we need to drill and refine NOW, as that's what our current world runs on. Oil is a part of a good long-term plan that includes plenty of "renewable" energy, much like your retirement portfolio starts as mostly stocks and moves away from them as the plan ages... as we get better with the alternative energy, we can move towards them and away from oil.

ding ding ding.
give the man a cookie.

Only problem with that plan.
It makes CRAP on the sound bytes. You can't say "I'm AWESOME!!!! and we'll have free energy tomorrow" and describe that scenario. But that's the only scenario that will even remotely help people.
Fines on corporations for making bank, will just raise prices to cover the fines/taxes. So they still make their bank.

i read an article where some scientiest made a worn or bug or something that craps oil.

Well I think we should save the enviroment only if the stinking rabbits or whatever they are trying to protect can be ground up and burned as an gas substitute.

Anyone read or hear where Russia planted a flag on the bottom of the arctic because there is a major abundance of untapped oil in that region? Just curious, someone had told me about it and i havent had a chance to research it. Apparantly you cant just plant flags at the bottom of the ocean and say "its mine"
