I had not mounted my Optima Mark III ham transceiver yet in my OBS because I just could not decide where to put it. I had made a custom bracket for my Super Duty when it was in there and after some thought I decided to make an overhead mount for the F350.
My headliner is like new and I was not going to drill any holes for a mount bracket. I figured I could use the 2 clips that hold the sun visors to mount a plate which the radio could be mounted to. So, I cut a piece of 1/8 aluminum to 4"x17" and drilled 2 holes on each side that would allow the visor clip's pin and screw to pass through and hold it securely to the ceiling of the truck.
I visited the shop that covered my seat and they gave me a piece of the vinyl they had used big enough to wrap the aluminum in. I covered it and mounted my radio bracket to it before installing it in the truck. It is totally reversible with no damage or permanent modification yet it is solid and sturdy. Anyway, give it a try, it just takes a little measuring and simple fab.
The Optima Mark III covers 2 meter to 11 meter (including CB) as well as FM, USB, LSB and AM. It is a very versatile radio that puts out a solid 50 watts. This combined with my Sirio P5000 antenna will talk about anywhere when the conditions are good. The side band performance is great with no drift and sensitive receive. I highly recommend it.
