my question is how do you know what kind of gears you have and what to use for what tire?? i whant to get bigger tires but i'm not sure what i have for gears or what rear and front axle i have never asked the old owner ?? how do i figuere this out any one have any ideas ??

you can run 33's or 35's w/o too much problem.

unless you have an oddball you should have a dana 30 front/c8.25 rear. rear could be 27 or 29 spline shafts. and 3.07 to 3.55 gears. there were weird combos. my 98 sport came from the factory with an 8.25 with 27 spl, others i knew had 29 splines. other xj's had a 231 case, i had a 242. jeep, go figure.

tire and gears depend on what you want to do with it. daily driver and semi weekend warrior? dedicated trail rig? keeping the stock axles or swapping? we need a little more info.

Make it a proportion. And you thought you would never use this after school. :D
x1/y1=x2/y2

x1 being your stock gear ratio
y1 being your stock tire size
x2 being your new gear ratio
y2 being your new tire size

Plug in the numbers and solve for x2. For instance (3.73/30)33=4.10.
In your case (3.55/28.287)33=4.14 or (3.55/28.287)35=4.39
