Has anybody ever rebuilt one themselves ? I have a 10 spline I picked up from a friend I'd like to freshen it up before it makes it's way under my Cj. I haven't rebuilt one before so I was wondering how hard is it ? Is there anybody close to Norfolk area that's willing to help me out or know a good shop in the area? I'll buy beer pizza or whatever. Thanks in advance for any input or help

I opened it up last night and the gears all looked really good except 2nd gear and the pto gear have some teeth missing.

I did one, it was about 5 years ago but nothing sticks out in my head about it being difficult.
I hate when a pro says no big deal, it usually costs me money in tools! Kinda like when people ask how hard is it to finish floors, I say no big deal at all!

I had no special tools, all basic hand tools. Everything came apart easily. The biggest issue I remember was pulling the top off. The shifter had to be in a particular position. I had to grind some burs off the reverse gear from people grinding it but the trans was 20+ years old at that point and I didn't expect any less. If you're attempting to rebuild a transmission I assume the person doing it has some sort of mechanical ability.

Can you replace just one gear or is it recommended to replace them all at once? 2nd gear and one of the pto gears are needing to be replaced.

Look closely at the left edge of second gear every tooth has material missing

As far as pto I'm not even sure what it does I just know one of the pto gears has a few teeth broke off. I'm a total newb when it comes to transmissions i know my way around a garage so I thought I would just pop the cover and take a look at what I had to work with

I have ran a lot of these and found that some like to drop out of third by themselves. I have never tried to rebuild one myself but rely on a pro to handle it for me.

I'm leaning that way too but I'm the kind of guy that likes to support the venders and stuff from the forum but due to the military I'm stuck in va and I don't know how any of the shops do business or have recommendations to go off of. I supposed I'll use my best judgement and pick one and hope I don't get boned.
