Figured I'd tell people about this because I can't be the only one interested in it:
My old phone had an app called Smart Assistant that I used to send an automated text message when it connected to different WiFi signals (home, work, etc). It was limited to only 3 actions (at least the free version was) and I used it to check in with people so they could keep tabs on me through the day. Couldn't find it any more when I upgraded to my new phone, but I found one called IFTTT (IF This Then That). It doesn't use WiFi as a trigger, but will use the phone's location & it will not send an automated text, but you can get around that by emailing #@vtext.com , #@txt.att.net, etc.

Just wanted to put it out there if anyone else had a use for it...

I use IFTTT for some lighting automation, it works okay. Not the most reliable and the timing is not consistent, but thats par for the course with remote server based stuff.

There's probably some geofencing apps that can also do the functions that you're looking for.

I might have to look elsewhere...was working fine until I updated my phone today. Its not a necessity, it just keeps me from having to remember to check in with people. I like blaming the app for failing over my memory!

You got a parole officer or what?

Not exactly...use it to check in with my folks when I'm in the office or apartment. Thought about putting it on my work phone, but if anybody needs me for work they can call.
