Main ingredients: 1980 CJ5, 4bt, whatever else I can scrounge...
I bought this things dirt cheap and should be scouring a 4BT for a little side work. And with gas prices the way they are I need something more pump friendly than my gasser tow rig and mopar 440 trail rig to drive around. And I'm not about to drive a Smart car or pay for one, and since this will be a rat of sorts getting parts from all sorts of things that I've collected its dubbed the smart rat.
Drivetrain is the 4BT that will come with a Chevy adapter, the SR4 4speed that came out of the jeep and dana 300. The jeep had the iron duke 4 banger so the trans with a little clutch and pressure plate adapting should bolt up as is. I'll keep the AMC 20 rear and dana 30 front for now, but I think the stock gearing with the 4 cylinder is 3.92:1 so that may not work in order to achieve 35mpg on 35's.
The main purpose is 35 mpg asap, daily driver and light wheeler. I know the drive train is junk except for the dana 300and likely won't hold up to a 4BT, but for now its what I got and its free. So I'll have to drive it accordingly. As stuff grenades I'll upgrade and look for deals along way. It needs to happen asap, and I'm going to do it as cheap as possible with intent on big potential later as time and money become available.
more to come.
