Hey guys, I just got a 1989 Grand Wagoneer. Under the hood, It's got all this hilarious old emissions equipment: belt-driven aux air pump, emission collection tube on manifolds, more valves than anyone needs, etc.

How much of this stuff do I need to keep in order to be legal?

Thanks

Get ahold of DMV i think you to the point of just a safty inspection. and should be able to get a waver on the emission's stuff cause the car is 22 years old

when i put a motor in my 87, it came out of a non emissions 82 vehicle. so i ended up stripping everything out. I was concerned with inspections, but nobody said a thing and she passed with flying colors.

i had a shop put a new exhaust (from header back) so i had to get a cat.

In NC, anything pre-96 just gets safety inspected now. I would keep the cat on it, but you can delete the stuff under the hood. Check locally if it makes you feel better.

depending on the motor you can sometimes get newer(or older on some motors) model intake/exhaust manifolds etc. and completely delete emissions components. doesnt look botched up either. like factory.

Even though you only get the safety inspection, you are still legally supposed to have EVERY piece of emissions equipment that came from the factory installed and APPEAR to be working. I.e. If there's the shell of a cat there it passes. (We can't look inside it and see that it's been gutted.) If the air pump is there and the belt is hooked up but there is nothing inside the pump it passes. If the pump is there and the belt is off, it fails. What you do after it passes is up to you until next year.
