Smoke on the water?

A friends Jeep Liberty

Steam/smoke coming from under the hood when I turn the heat/defrost on... I seem to notice it only when its raining

I tend to think a leak somewhere hitting the block or maybe a heating coil?

I've seen the valve cover gasket leak enough to fall onto the manifold and smoke before

but would it only happen during a rain?

that's the part that is throwing me off.

hood seal gone bad letting rainwater in to hit the heater core causing steam?

Could that be part of it?

Could be and prob cheaper than valve cover gasket and less time consuming as well
