I gota 95 grand cherokee 4.0 with 196,xxx and when i floor it going down the road ive been told it puts out alittle bit of smoke. Why does this happen and is there anything i can do to fix it?
ive been told it puts out just alittle bit of blackish smoke. only does it when i have it all the way on the floor.. maybe carbon build up?but it does it every time i floor it( i dont do that very often either)
Black smoke is normal when you floor it. Black smoke indicates a rich mixture. Blue smoke indicates burnt oil. The injectors go to full open at WOT and the cat cannot convert it all. I wouldn't worry about it.
That is normal from what I've seen. When my wife has been driving her 95 4.0 grand for a while, and then I drive it, it dumps out smoke when I floor it. When I've been driving it for a couple days or weeks, and then I floor it, there is basically no smoke at all. I drive it harder than she does.
You've got a 4.0 with 200k and you get a little black smoke occasionally. What are you complaining about? Most motors with 200k dump more than a little!
another question about smoke. Also while in 4wheel drive it putts out whiteish smoke that smells horrible, after pulling a heavy trailer, or just sitting idling for awhile
I didn't think you were complaining, I was just trying to point out that you're blessed to have a clean motor with that kinda mileage! A lot of cars smoke worse than that fresh from the factory. Ever get behind a VTec Honda that's being wound out? As for the whitish smoke, that sounds more serious. Being in 4wd shouldn't make a difference, it's going to be load dependent. Sounds like you may be due for a catalytic converter, though. If it smells sweetish, it could be an intake manifold gasket or head gasket going south and letting coolant into the cylinders when the engine's good and hot.
If it smells kind of like rotten eggs it's the catalytic converter doing it's job when under heavy load. This too is normal. You are working the engine so it's going to pollute more, thus the cat has to do more. Technically speaking, it's the cat burning up a minute amount but that is kind of it's job.
White smoke is usually coolant burning so take that for what it's worth. I'd say though, it's probably nothing to worry about. It's got 200k on it. It's gonna do some funny stuff, but as long as it runs good I'd let it eat.
