So are there more than 2 obstacles in Uwharrie?... - May 9-11

All this talk about the race...

I only remember two or so obstacles at Uwharrie...That hill climb...Daniel?...and Kodak rock...

So at this race...it seems as though there can't possibly be enough true obstacles in the park to even come close to evening out the field.

Even in the stock class for instance...say I was in my 1982, open diffed, 31" tired, carpotatoed, 68hpowered, 22R'ed, pickup and the guy next to me was in his 2003, open diffed, 31" tired, fuel rejected, 172hpowered, 4.0'ed, Wrangler.
So as far as this competition goes we're stuck in the same class I would assume.
Primitave Trail: -drag race down a dirt road? - Jeep wins
Mud Pit: -wheel spin/speed/momentum - Jeep wins
Log Pit: -which I despise and really think it shouldn't even be considered in this comp...but...(press pedal on right and hold on) - Jeep Wins
Rock Crawling: - only part where a less powered rig has a chance...

Seems to me this comp is going to be mostly based on HP's and liberal use of the gas pedal as opposed to a DPG race where there are 6 or so good obstacles. Where the man driving a slightly modified Samurai does stand a good chance of beating a big motored buggy with all the trimmings if he plays his obstacles smart and gets 'em on the first shot.

OR...did I miss a bunch of obstacles last time I was at URE??

Possibly take this into consideration during course design...eh?

I guess what I'm trying to say is...Who's ready to get beat by a little Toyota without a prayer?...again...:flipoff2:

(...cue 4 months of smack talk...)

Whaaaaah. :flipoff2:

How many 4 bangers do you see in XRRA? Same goes for carbs..

If it's a timed event, then the ability to pick up speed is gonna matter.. but power is nothing without control.. Someone who can't drive won't be able to go as fast as someone who can...

Remember, Slade was reaaaly close to Bigelow's time (4 cyl vs V6), and had Greg not had his issues, would have been a little faster than that...

Hmm, I see this race coming down mostly to driver skill. Being able to handle the drainage bumps, take corners at speed, and make it through obstacles quickly will win the day. Having said that, I don't see myself as particularly skilled at any of those things. But I'm psyched to practice and get better by May.

FWIW, I'd guess that the short wheelbase of a typical TJ will not lend itself to high speed uwharrie runs.

This is what is holding me back from competing. I gave it some thought and couldn't remember much for obstacles at URE. Looks to me that light weight and mucho HP is gonna rule the day. I don't have either. I would however like to but for $250, diesel and propane it looks like I can't muster the funds.

tombstone...but you have to drive straight over the top of it. Pull front tires till they touch the ledge..mat it and hope you clear enough to teeter on the belly pan down the other side. One of my favorites there.

Honestly, i thini you are hitting on the POINT of thsi event. It is NOT a rock-crawling competition, it's more of a rally/autocross.
So, yes, having the big-ass tires and super-low crawl ratio may not be as much of an advantage. Personally, I see that as appealing, b/c it gets it geared more towards us guys w/ relatively stock vehicles.
I don't really see having high HP and a lot of "speed" per se, and being ll that big of a deal though. I mean it's not like we're gonna be going 60 mph or anything. I think it'll be more about maintaining momentum, handling through corners etc, like mentioned above.

If they have a fastest time to win event, you may really be shocked at the speeds that are hit. If they run Daniel the rocky hill would be the only spot I'd be in low range. We pre-run that trail all the time, There are several spots where I've hit drive in hi range with an auto. This is where my slamming into trees and getting hurt theroy comes in.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is that there couldn't be enough places on the course where control has the opportunity to catch up to shear careless speed.
Gregg pointed out another obstacle I've never seen...so that's 3?...is it even feasable to put them all in the same course?...

Remember, Slade was reaaaly close to Bigelow's time (4 cyl vs V6), and had Greg not had his issues, would have been a little faster than that...

EDIT: Yeah...none of that really illustrated my point at all...

OR...I could take my Honda just to place higher than Rich...
:flipoff2:

My point with the DPG Rock race analogy was that the times were within just a few seconds on a 2 minute course, with the jeep being at a HUGE disadvantage if you look at the specs of the 2 rigs..

I'm not sure if I'm right but I suspect this is the obstacle that Greg is talking about. It wouldn't be on the course they are thinking of.

in my opinion it will come down to the driver and the weight of sack he is sporting.

I will be be bringing a specially prepped rig just for this event, if in fact it does happen. Can you say XJ on nitrous and 33s, sans roof!

I am looking forward to this event happening.

Log Pit: -which I despise and really think it shouldn't even be considered in this comp...

I said this in my original post with a log jam pictured as a mud hole with logs laying in it...am I correct?...or is a log jam just logs layed out on the ground...no mud...if no mud then that could be something else fun to go through at this thing...

Don't think the mud is involved (or I'll be trying to get it nixed) just logs to slow the speed down some. Or really break stuff if someone hits em wide open.
