Was wandering around sLowes the other day...Looking at new shovels and rakes...There on the end isle are the American Flags. I think about the one hanging over my mailbox. It's looking a bit tattered. Pick up a new on, pay my $12.00, carry it home, go to hang it on the pole...Notice that the front and back of the package are the same...Well, all except for the language it is printed in...English on one side. Spanish on the other...The insert in the package has the "how to display" instructions in both English and Spanish...

Discuss.

Nothing wrong with that. An immigrant who has learned the basics of English, is proud to be here, but is still more comfortable in their native tongue should be able to know the proper way to display the flag... and good for them for showing that they're happy to be here!

An improperly displayed flag can generate some intense emotions and animosity from those who know how it should be displayed.

And, I've seen more than a few people who only speak English that obviously didn't bother to read that "how to display" guide.

If a non-english person cared enough to make 'our' flag their own and simply needed a little help figuring out how to do it... I'm all for it... By God...

was it made in China?

Probably:lol:

One day, I'm going to get me a flag pole high enough for my flag. It's motherfuckinhuge, I got it when I was on the USS Kennedy and it was an old flag that was going to get retired, so I acquired it, took it to my sister in law and had her clean up the edges, looks as good as new. It's about 9x17.

I had a 9X17 Holiday colors that was given to me when I left my Desroyer in 1984. I hung on Sept. 12th 2001. It was stolen from my house on Sept. 13th 2001. That flag was flying when the Marine barracks in Beruit were bomb! We had the whole neighborhood ready to kill that S.O.B.!!

That's pretty sad. What a turd.

When we moved into our house, it had an ooold flag on a pole in the front yard. Was getting tattered, so I bought a new one and replaced it.
Within 6 months, that one was torn and faded too. Bought another from a different pace. It didn't last long either.
At that point I got frustrated with the whole situation and felt like a yutz having a scraggly flag in my yard. Plus the pole didn't have a light, which bugged me since it's supposed to be lit at night. i'd rather have nnothing than one that iss inappropriate. I ended up taking it and the pole down, now just use one of the temp-mount poles that mount of the porch wall for holidays etc.
Where do oyu guys get a flag that is good quality and lasts? The last one I bought at the beach and it was nylon, I figured people w/ that kind of wind would sell a decent one.

Last 4th of july someone went around the neighborhood and placed cheap vynal flags on wooden dowels at the ends of everyones driveways. I was very impressed with the patriotism of that person, the money and time invested in the project. I havent brought myself to remove it yet and may not, tattered and torn and dirty now...but holding firmly where it was planted.

As for the flag at lowes...im just glad they had american flags for sale. Ive heard of places where they only have mexican flags.

You should remove it, if it's in the condition you said it is.. Nothing says you can't replace it with a new one!

My flag is mounted on my front porch. the pole is a piece of thick conduit. with eye bolts and small clips to secure the flag. The flag is probably 3X5?? or maybe bigger. Our old one was tattered and we found this one at the trade lot, in a box, labeled with something about the republican party??? So, not sure where they got it, but it was made in the USA and it is of good quality.
If you have a flag in bad condition, you can take it to the local VFW or DAV and they will dispose of it properly.
Or do it yourself by getting you an old coffee can or other metal bucket. pour some lighter fluid on it and burn it until it's gone. No pomp, No ceremony, just do it.

Good one Chip!!!!!!!! Most people dont know how to properly "retire" an old flag.

You can also give them to a local Boy Scout troop or the district office. They'll do the full "Retirement ceremony" every now and then. The kids and parents alike love it.

From what I was taught about proper flag etiquette, there is supposed to be no ceremony whatsoever.

LOL On a complete different note, Dave, did you know that when I do spell check with your name(ratlabguy) the spell check tries to correct your name to rutabaga!

Even though I was a boy scout, my experience with the flag disposal was with the VFW (local) and there was no ceremony at all.
The disposal was in a dignified manner, but no ceremony. I took it as the way it was supposed to happen

Some great information.

Question to all of you proudly displaying your flags? How many have a dedicated light to light the flag at night. A properly displayed flag should never be flown in the dark without a dedicated light. There are many "rules" regarding a flag and its display. I personally do not think a person should remove it because it does not meet the "rules" but every effort should be made to properly display it.

On another note how does everyone feel about the flag being worn as clothing, blankets, and other items similar to these? I think if it is used with respect then go for it. As far as wearing a flag as a thong bikini (I like the look but not the choice of cloth) is very wrong. Just my .02

After reading over most of this page http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html I realized how much disrespect is shown towards are flag today. It has always bothered me to see a flag used as clothing or blankets and such but the more I think about it I am getting upset seeing our flag disrespected in t.v. ads and all over. Hell I actually have some folding chairs that I thought was patriatic because they are flags. I never thought about them being disrespectful to the flag being used as chairs. I will be getting new chairs and properly dispoding those. I do not know how many times they have lad on the ground while camping. I bought them at the Air Force Exchange too. I will be more observent from now on that is for certain.

Um, no, I did not know that?
Perhaps I have an alternate ego as a hearty root vegetable peddler that I'm unaware of.
