Went to Aldi today. They were working on switching out all the price labels on the shelves for digital labels. So they will light up, but, there is no wire connections to charge or run them. I asked how they will charge, and, they said through WiFi. OK, so, that confuses this old mind. How does that work?

They update through wireless signal. They have a tiny embedded battery that lasts 3-5 years and then they replace them

This. The guy didn't know what he's talking about. They are just disposable, battery powered. Or at most are recharged once every several months. But most likely disposable.
Which is pretty fly that we're at this level in tech, but the wastefulness really bothers me.

Sorta like batteries for cars that have zero recycling benefit and waste we haven't really worked out disposing?

Anyone ever worked for a company that employed key fob login devices? Also known as token Id devices. They autogenerate passwords every xx seconds and have a finite lifetime before the battery dies.

Lowes
No, but I have a car key
Right - but your car key doesn’t have a screen on it that displays a numeric code that is generated and transmitted to it by a remote source. The fob and the price tag do ;)

A lot of the fobs are just pre programmed w an algorithm that will predict what the sequence of codes is. No remote data, they just start and go for 3 years then die.

That way they can update the store pricing at the click of a button and don't have to pay someone to swap labels.

It could also change AFTER you put it on your cart, which would be pretty irritating!

I'm thinking she said the home office would be doing any updates and they would be updated at night when closed. As with any store there will be changes in what is where as far as location, when they do that, the tag will stay, and they will have updates to move product. Also, never thought about it, other updates will be because of seasonal foods.
