So I'm going to build a stroker engine

Alright here's the deal. My vintage '72 302 has decided to puke a head gasket, so instead of working on the engine in the truck I decided to find one to swap it out with. A guy I work with runs a machine shop in the evening behind his house. He gave me a heck of a deal on a stock rebuilt 351W. A dead beat dropped it off and had it rebuilt. Then never came back to pay or pick up, thats been 2 years now. So I bought the engine for $300. Like I said it is a completely stock rebuild. That's not going to cut it. I've ordered a 3.850" stroke Eagle crankshaft and am still shopping for a piston that will work with my heads. The 393ci uses a stock 1.600 compression hieght 302 piston and 351W rods. I also bought a FRPP M-6250-B50 camshaft. It is the 1995 Cobra "R" camshaft, 300HP with 365FTLBS. The profile looks similar to a marine cam so it should pull strong through out the power band. I plan on using the stock 60cc heads since they are freshly rebuilt. New full length headers and exhaust are also in the works. I'm not looking to build a drag racer, just monster torque pulling machine. :driver:

Sounds great. That is what I plan to do when the 351 in my truck takes a dump. A buddy of mine had one in a 2wd Ranger. It would roll out pretty good.

You will want a coolant crossover/return pipe at the rear of the heads.

I know a couple of guys with Windsor strokers that had detonation problems (incl one complete meltdown) because of coolant vapor locking around the 4 and 8 cyl.

You don't need a kit. I already have new standard bearings, both rods and mains. The crank runs about $250 from Eagle but you might have to shop around. The best price on pistons are the Speed Pro H273CP hyperuetectics. But they are flat tops and make around 11:1 compression with my 60cc heads. I found a set of Kieth Black #364 pistons that have a 22cc dish and come out to 9.5:1 with my heads. They cost double the Speed Pros at a little over $200 though. Then you reuse your 5.596 351W rods. I'll have around $500 after in it after I by the rings and cam. I have seen the intake mod on several 351W's and I believe it is a worth while mod.

Let me ask an opinion. Okay, so I opened the door... I found the 22cc dish pistons that make 9.5:1 static and when you figure rod length and cam time makes 8.85:1 dynamic compression. They also have a 12cc dish that will make 10.6:1 static and 9.7:1 dynamic. I believe I need the lower compression to make it less likely to detonate, but the higher compression should make a bit more power. I don't know which I would benifit more from.
