Just got back in from vacation late yesterday afternoon. Get unpacked and go to watch a little TV. Dish receiver won't power up. Check the one in my daughters room and it's working fine. Then I go to turn on the desktop computer. It won't power up. Start checking around the house and can't find anything else with a problem. We always unplug the main power surge protectors for TV stuff and computer when we go out of town, just in case of bad storms. My daughter had forgotten to unplug or even turn off her computer and it's fine. So, anybody got a clue on what might have gone on around here whilst I was away. Even if lightening did strike, the TV and computer were unplugged and they are what's NOT working. What a way to come back home.

Got a breaker tripped?

Nope, everything else plugged into the power strips is still working. I tried the Dish receiver again. It tried to power up then sparks shot out the back and it released it's magic smoke. Not sure what went on here in our absence, but something did.

Were the coax connections still attached?

totally possible that lightning ran in through the coax and straight to that receiver only....unusual but possible.

will the TV power on and just not the sat box?

shit Im close and got a multi meter or 4

Yes, including my daughters which is totally fine.

More than likely you had a lightning strike close to the house that induced current in the ground. Your coax is almost always connected to ground someplace in the house. Either at the service entrance (cable tv) or dish, a splitter or amp, or through one of the devices in the house.

I wouldn't lose much sleep trying to figure out why some things got cooked and others didn't. It's not uncommon. My parents had a lightning strike a couple of years ago that cooked the washing machine, the heat pump, and about half of the electronics in the house. Other things seemed completely unaffected. It killed one sat receiver, but the other was fine, etc.

Thanks for the offer Ron, but I think this is gonna be one of them unsolved mysteries. It's really strange what isn't working and what is fine. If it came in through the coax, it went through the modem first and it's working just fine. Who knows at this point.

You have Dish for TV and cable for internet? If so then the tv isnt even hooked up to the coax from cable tv, just the modem is, which makes it even crazier that two things unplugged and not hooked up to any of the same wiring in house got killed

check this article out, it may make you wonder specially since your tv and computer were unplugged

You should be able to get a new power supply for your computer, I bet thats all it needs. Scroll down and check prices by how many watts. You should be able to open yours up and see how many it is. You could also get one from your computer manufacturer.
