Soap Preference

I personally like Joe's Hand Cleaner from O'Reilly's. No pumice in it, smells like bubble gum and doesn't look like it will do a thing, but it works great! I keep a finger nail brush handy. As other's have said it works best without water until you are ready to rinse.

I had always used GoJo or the likes, until my buddys mom started making soaps. Now I use her "shop soap bar" and it is awesome. I know its got coconut, some soapy waxy stuff, but the big thing is that it has crushed walnut shells in it. It all but wipes off grease and grime. Paint, anti-seize, brake gunk, everything. And the best part? it smells like dirt, which is my normal state of being.

Dawn with sugar?

Yup, put about a spoonful of sugar in your hand and dump on some dawn and mix it together in your hands. The dawn sugar mixture scrubs better than just about anything and you pretty much always have it.

On another note if you can find it, Beaver Nut Scrub is a really good hand cleaner. Has ground walnut shells in it.

... get the vet ones and they cover you to the elbow...
Somehow that made me think of this:

I believe I’ve tried all the combos listed here. But I have found nothing works better than 50/50 dawn (or Ajax) + gojo (other brands like purple power work) on slightly wet hands. Not one then the other. But literally both at the same time. I don’t even need to do anything later in the shower if I do it this way

I just use straight dawn (no water) on my hands as a "pre-cleaner". Work it in my hands to free up the oil/grease and then rinse with water and another shot of Dawn.
