Socialism of School Supplies

A while back I read an article or post somewhere about a parent that took issues with the socialism of school supplies. Seems they went to the school and demanded the supplies back from the teacher, then proceeded to explain that the supplies belonged to their kid.

Was that here or does anyone recall that story?

i remember the story. dont remember where it happened. In Davie county, my boss complained of having to chip in on some kind of "fee" to buy school supplies for the classroom for each of his kids.

We have to do that, but dont mind because the alternative is the kids do without or teachers end up buying them. I have a lot of respect for good teachers, and they dont make enough to support all their students. And many children can't afford the necessary supplies and its neve the kids fault. So I always do what I can and try to do a little more.

My daughter has a fantastic teacher this year. She has really shown me how much difference the indiviual can make. They had their national standardized MAP testing last week and her students all exceeded their growth goal and her class showed the most growth (I'm not sure how these metrics are estalished but her growth was a 23 and next place was an 11) For a reward the district gave her $15 to have a "party" for 26 students.

The students had pizza, soda, and ice cream for dessert outside. Its amazing what $15 will buy ;)

I don't mind supplying classrooms either. We get a list that is "what your kids will need" and a secondary list that is "Teacher Wish list". We first get our kids what they need, then pick and choose everything we can afford to get for the teachers wish list.

But, when the teacher tells the kids to take all their supplies and put them in class supplies to share with everyone, then I take issue. and this has happened to a profound extent this year.

Better start saving NOW for when they hit you up at the start of the 2nd semester... because the supplies YOU bought expressly for YOUR kids, were pitched into the "community fund" and are now depleted... so now NONE of them can work!

So exactly where does the $$ from the sale of [insert crap dejour: seeds/candy/cards/wrapping paper/books/magazine subscriptions] go? :flipoff2:

And the money from the "education lotery" which I heard just raised the price of tickets! I bet the pay out didn't raise equally!

my wife writes my child's name on the supplies, most of the other kids turn their noses up when they get something with her name on it and give it to her. teachers say they run across left over supplies with my child's name on it in later classes(my other child goes to the same school and we keep in contact with the teachers, they both have had good ones) and they comment that it brings back good memories for them, especially when they find out how well their former student is doing in her new school(middle school)

You do realize that once we got the lottery for education, that the lawmakers pulled all other funding because there was now a "new" source of funds to pay to our kids education...right?
