I need a good powerful soldering gun, i think weller's are good but i don't really know, my current pen soldering iron is not up to the task. And my old gun finally gave aup. I need to melt some existing (probably silver solder) and re-solder it. Where can a i get a good gun and what makes it good- amps. They should have on the packages for people like me. this one is really freaking hot.

YOUR OLD GUN, WHAT DIED ? if it was just the tip burned up, get a length of 12ga solid strand ( short length of romex striped will work fine ) shape it like the former element, smash the tip a little with a hammer. install like the old element was.

Works like a charm and is hotter than the regular element, when I was repairing power tools, we did this all the time, yeah, they burn out every couple a weeks, ( daily useage) but the price was right.

OR, Lowes, HD, Radio SHack all have a selection, get the highest wattage you can find They are like hair dryers, the higher the wattage, the hotter they are.

The amps are what makes it heat up & work, but most are measured in Watts. So just divide 120Volts/XXWatts to get the current. At work, we use an adjustable (600-800*F) Weller and it works pretty good. I guess it depends on how often you're going to use it, if its not that often I'd get one at the local Radio Shack. Otherwise, I'd look around any electronics shops or online for a Weller.

it was just the tip but it got thrown out of the shop accroos the street not long ago b/c the MF'r would not melt and i needed it to melt then. If your a tool of mine and you don't show up for work your ass is getting fired. thats a good idea with the wire.

Propane/Butane torch might work depending on what you're doing.

That works excellent. Alternately, depending on how much solder you need to melt, you can use a heat gun. I've used one to solder leads onto thick copper bars that the iron had absolutely NO chance of melting!
