I have a 87 YJ weak TBI 350 700r4 and Dana 44's front and rear with 5.13's open front spool rear. I was looking at 37-38 in tires but 4WP has 40 LTB's on sale. I have new alloy shafts ordered for the front and a Spartan locker so I'm upgrading the front ASAP. Tell my why I shouldn't go with the 40's:popcorn:

Because for what you're about to spend on tires you can buy a built 60/14 bolt for.

1300? I have to have a DD front 60. They are 1K or more if you can find them. Im also SUA 4 in lift 1.25 body and cut fenders.

If you plan on ever driving on the road 40 ltbs bring the suck.

While that's true, you can do a one ton Axle combo for way less than you think. What people charge for a Ford 60 is a crying shame ripoff considering what you get and what's usable.
Which is exactly why I'm using Superduty axles (60&s10.5) in my next build. :D

You can do iiiiit!!! all nite long............

unable to balance them?
It's not so much that they won't balance(I use water/antifreeze) it's more that they are made in china and are not round. Maybe I just got a bad set.

I've only driven mine about 10 miles since I got them about 6 months ago and didn't get over 35. They may get better once they're broken in. Mine measure out at 38.5"x14" on a 17x8 steel wheel with 5 psi and a 5k lb tj.

Thanks for the real world input. "sigh" I guess I'll stick with 36 SX's or 37KM2's.

What about the military trucks? There is one on here for sale, axles are $1700 for both. Thats a 14bolt with 5.29's and a Detroit locker and a 60 5.29's with some other locker, can't remember the name..I am not a big fan off the 44 with that size tire!....just my .02

If I went to a PD front axle I'd have to swap transfer cases. I have a DD transfer case. Maybe one day when my rich uncle dies...lol

Can't go wrong with an sx. I hated to see my maxxis just sitting there and had a guy who wanted them so I sold em. Figured I'd buy something cheap that I didn't mind wearing down on the road. Should have just set the whole thing on fire and walked away.

That says volumes.

@krehel24 CUCVs have 4.56 gears, a Detroit in the rear, and only certain models had a Power Lock limited slip in the front. Most fronts were open. I'm not aware of anybody making 5.29s for a 14 bolt.
