So, my new job puts me into reading blogs and whatnot for network security. Sony's really screwing up, their "tool" to prevent people pirating music is invasive (scans your equipment), poorly written (security through obscurity), and already used by hackers to send out works (ok, they're halfassed ones, but hey).

Here's what you are agreeing to when you buy a Sony CD.

Plus they're going to kill off selling used games:

Homeland security doesn't like this stuff:

And it's all over the place:

-- I used the technique in this article and learned some nifty DNS tricks using the -norecurse option in dig. Pretty cool. You can forensically figure out if someone using your DNS server (or others) has gone to a site or group of sites.

Rob sent me these (I'd seen the first one, but not the second).

If you load the CD, it's already installed this crap BEFORE you accept or deny the license.

A list of albums, eff probably has one too.

A word to the wise, disable autorun on your CD/DVD drives anyhow:

Update your antivirus stuff, because the AV vendors and microsoft are already claiming to be able to remove it.

I'm not buying ANYTHING Sony until they rethink their attitudes. You should not allow anyone to have control over your computer to monitor your activities. No artist is worth that.

I used to be a sony "fanboy".
Even still clinging to the minidisk format..

I think I've purchased the last thing I'll buy with the Sony name on it.

Might have to get an IPod

<ducking.. and expecting to be hit by lightning>

Don't think Apple won't do the same thing! I just did a research paper on digital music, boy did I learn a lot!

iTunes has the ability to limit what devices it can play in, how many times it can be burned, etc. Although there were listed options when purchase was made, Apple has the right to change any of these at any time and already has.

As I see it, iTunes is simply selling total music control to one seller. The size and storage of these devices is good, beyond that, not much.

Eh, some does... Disabling autorun is a plus. From what I've read, not accepting the EULA does nothing, because the malware is already on your box. This is not the only vendor that Sony/BMG is using, and there will be other issues with a couple of new ones. The best bet is not to buy Sony, anything. If you need to have the tracks on your computer, I would suggest backing up, ripping, uploading the output to another server, and restoring from backup. This will probably violate the secific license, and may be illegal. You will have to read the license to find out.

thankfully ive stolen my music for the past few years..sony's being a little bitch

Wow. I'm just now catching up on this.
But, yup, I think I'm done w/ Sony Music. This is just plain rediculus.
Fact of capitolism is, only recourse we have (besides expressing yourself to the political powers - that's what they;'re for) is to not purchase the product.

Feel pretty bad, b/c my dad work for Sony-Ericsson Mobile. Totally different schtick, but the result has been that I own alot of Sony Audio products, bought at employee discount. Now I feel ashamed.

its people like me that cause these types of things. I havent bought a music CD in 5 years.
mike, i'd be interested to hear your stance on why it's ok to dl, burn, etc. pirated music. from some of your posts here, you seem to hold people to a pretty high morale code when it comes to honesty, stealing, etc. fyi, i don't consider it a problem to dl and burn music for personal use so this isn't a call out post or anything.
