I'm looking for a locker for the front of my XJ. It's a Dana 30 with a disconect that has been bypassed so it's allways connected. What's the difference in "Lockright" and "Spartan"? Any advice welcome. Kinda new the this stuff.

Lockrite is made by Richmond Gear, and Spartan is made by Yukon. Lockrite has been around forever, Spartan is a newcomer to the scene, and is pretty much regarded as unproven at the moment. Frankly if it were my rig I would go with a Aussie Locker. All three have a similar design, but IMO the Aussie has the best reputation of the three. I can tell you that an Aussie held up just fine in the D44 up front in my full sized Bronco for several years, and I have a very heavy foot.

much as Roughshod said...they are all of basically the same design.

The larger pins / spring combo made me take the plunge on a Spartan for my Dana 30...will be going in approx 5-6 weeks from now...so I won't have anything to tell...but preliminary reviews I've seen are good.

I think the Spartan was a few bucks cheaper....maybe enough to buy a pizza...nothing get excited about.

Summit has a "Powertrax" Lock-Right for around $300. Is that the lock-right that everyone reffers to? If so, I believe that's what I will go with. Also, will I need to reshim my gearset when I install it?

no gear set reshim we have spartans and lockrights in stock for less than $300 i like the psartans better they wre kinda sweet easy to install with a new crosspin. and there a bt cheaper.

Go with ECGS when you purchase your locker. I just bought a lot of parts from them and shipping and customer service is phenomenal. I'm running a lock-rite and have had no issues. I beat the ever living crap out of my rig. Running 34" tires. I just upgraded to chromoly axle shafts and 4.56 gears (thank ECGS!) in my dana 30. I don't expect any problems out of the locker.

I put a spartan in my xj dana 30 but since you have locked your shafts together its gonna be crappy to drive cause it will try to lock all the time I took mine wheelin this weekend and the spartan did great

I've only had this jeep a few days. I went wheelin in the mudd this weekend. It felt like both front wheels was diggin at the same time. Isn't that locked? Is there a way to see if it's locked without pullin the cover?

the front differential is a standard D30 open diff. both tires will dig in the mud, but if traction far exceeds one than the other, it will spin one tire and not the other. same amount of traction, equal spin.

I've got a Spartan waiting to go in a jeep next week. The pins on it are a lot beefier than a Lockrite. Everything else looks pretty similar. Finishing and packaging are top notch, so we'll see how it goes.

I just installed a Sparton Locker in my 79 CJ5 Dana 30 and as ECGS said it was extremly simple to install, it took me longer to get the carrier out then it did to instll the locker. I went with the sparton becasue of price and the fact all my research told me all lunchbox lockers are pretty much the same. But yes the Sparton is new to the market and there isn't a lot of info on it.

I hate to under cut ECGS on this becaus they support this sight but I ordered mine from a company on Ebay it was $234.99 w/ free shipping. That was about $35 cheaper then an Aussie and closed to a $100.00 cheaper then a Lockrite and neither of them come with the new harden cross pin like the Sparton does.-

Here is a pic of the sparton installed
