So how does a man get to build something along these lines and get it legal and titled?

Saw this in town. Handmade frame. Chevy engine trans, 9 inch rear. Basic lights and no safety or smog other then belts.

Pic for reference of said vehicle.

Is it not as easy as having a firewall with a VIN number and associated title?

That looks like its using a T body, so possibly a title for such.

NC has ways to title antique, replica, or custom vehicles: NCDOT: Other Vehicle Types to Register

You're going to want receipts for all the major parts, too prove it wasn't stolen.

Technically transferring/modifying a vin in any way is illegal. Now if you used the whole firewall off something with vin attached, that might be another story.

Oh yeah, not transferring or altering. Like you said, start with a T body that already has a VIN and title. Replace everything except the firewall that has the VIN attached.

This was a fiberglass body.....ended up seeing the guy again at Lowe's. He said it was titled as an 2006. Yet he doesn't have emissions anything....then again the motor and trans combo was 70's...

So whose to say a man cannot build a 4wd "kit car" and make it legal? What is the legal blurry part I am missing?

I know at one time PJ was planning to title a buggy. At least I think he was. Not sure if he ever did or not. Check with him, I'm sure he has some answers.

We used to build a couple T-buckets at the last shop I worked at. You welded frame together and modified how you wanted it, painted body and added drivetrain. Titled as a custom vehicle. DMV inspector has to come out and inspect and put a tag in the door jamb.

This brings up another question I've always had. What do the jeep guys do when replacing a tub? What if you had a cj7 that was rotting and bought a yj tub and frame to swap everything over? Or maybe bought an aluminum tub? How does that work? What if you bought a tj with a rotted tub and a solid frame and swapped tubs from a junkyard? How do you go about correcting the title and vin legally?

I've been curious about this myself, considering my current build...Figured I'd cross that bridge when I get there. I do have the VIN (since it came originally on the CJ, obviously) but the frame has been modified. The body has been chopped up, but I have no receipts for any of the major drivetrain components since they were ALL worked out on barter deals of one fashion or another. Once I get the title back (long story...in short, it's at the OK Tax Commission, has been there for the better part of the last ~15 years) I assume I'd be G2G, but not sure. PA is stupid with title/tags, and I don't know if I'd ever get away with titling it as anything but what it originally was. But who's to say that they would look at the title/registration, then look at the vehicle and not start scratching their head?

I have a question on this.... wife’s TJ just got finished with her Ls swap an she can’t get it inspected or get the tag... Jeep is a 98 an the Ls came from an 07 so they can’t plug it up for the emission crap..what do we do

Fix the computer connector to go to the ls ecm. As long as the ls computer is happy (monitors ok & no codes) it'll pass. You might want to flash the jeep vin into the ecu so the inspection station doesn't get flagged for plugging up a different vehicle..

^^ This. You will need to make sure the OBD port is hooked up and the LS pcm will need to be tuned with the Jeep info and VIN. If the PCM is not programmed with the Jeep VIN it will most likely get you and/or the inspection shop in trouble if they pass it. EFI LIVE has the ability to change the VIN and vehicle info, but last time I checked HP Tuners does not.

^ still has the v8 into a non v8 model issue that nobody seems to care about. by the book its not legal. but everybody seems to look past that.

Sure but the ecm is going to report the proper vin. The v8/not v8 is less of an issue than gas/diesel .. compliant swap is that year or newer motor and maintain all emissions equipment.. (maybe it's one model year beern minimum, don't quite recall)

For light-duty vehicles, installation of a light-duty eng~ne into a different light-duty vehicle by any
person would be considered tampering unless the resulting vehicle is identical (with regard to all
emission related parts, engine design parameters, and engine calibrations) to a certified configuration of
the same or newer model year as the vehicle chassis, or if there is a reasonable basis for knowing that
emissions are not adversely affected as described in Memo 1A"

With regard to emissions, it would be identical to xyz. Just the shell it's in is different..

This is the piece that basically says, you can install a v8, if there was a model with a v8. If not, technically its illegal.
