What is this broken part on an older speedaire compressor?

I dont know for sure, but that looks like a pressure reference, possibly? Given where the tubing connects it has air pressure on it, so my uneducated guess would say either equalizing pressure in the motor (like a crank vent), or referencing pressure for a shutoff/bypass.

Does it run without it? Any difference in operation?
