So I got a ticket for going 80 in a 70 on I40 in Davie County, also got me for a seatbelt.
I havent had a ticket in over 8 years, My question is should I hire a lawyer or go at it alone?
The Trooper told me if i showed up and had a good record it would more than likely be dropped.

lawyer up!! even if it is dropped it will show up on your driving record!! its not worth putting up with the hassel just wait until the letters show up pic the best price and mail them a check!! thats my $.02

scared to death!!!!!

Youll have letters from 5 lawyers by monday. I got a ticket last summer in wilmington. For me, 3 hours from the court house, I just paid a lawyer so I didn't get the points against my record.

It's a time vs cost thing really.
10 over is pretty minor infraction, they may drop it altogether, or at worst will be reduced to 9 over which results in no points and no effect on insurance.
A lawyer on the other hand will have it either completely dropped or changed to "improper equipment" which carries no moving violation record.

Add up the total cost of your court fees + fee for ticket (if its reduced but kept), + your costs to go yourself (gas + lunch + parking + lost days wages etc).
then compare that to the total fees you'll be offered from the 10 lawyers that will mail you by next week.
many times the difference is not big.

This.

I got a ticket for 79 in a 70 in Davie County back in 08. First time I had ever been pulled over. Trooper would not give me a break. In 2 days I had dozens of letters from lawyers. Got it dropped to improper equipment. Paid the lawyer about $300 and I was done.

It will be a $50 lawyer fee and. 280 court cost. They will knock it down to improper equipment. Just mail a check to the lawyer. He will take care of it. If you are having money issues ask the lawyer to extend out the payment due date as long as possible. Most of the time they will give you 3 months to pay the court cost

It's been a while since I've gotten a ticket (knock on wood), but from age 17-20, I was getting one every 6 months, upwards of 15mph over the posted speed limit. I lawyered up every time, just because I figure that's their job. You don't think you're qualified for open heart surgery as well, do you??? Anyway, every single ticket was dropped for improper equipment. The only ticket I ever had to do more than hand over the cash was for 85 in a 70 through Buncombe county. The lawyer told me I'd need to go to a local dyno shop to get my speedo checked...I did, it was only off by 2 mph at 70. After paying that $150 as well, it was dropped for improper equipment.

I'd call the Davie Co. Courthouse DA office and ask if there is anything you can do to reduce the charge. Some counties offer a Defensive Driving course, some don't.

I got pulled in McDowell Co. in Dec. 2012 and written for 9 over. My insurance agent said it cause insurance to increase due to a vehicle damage claim within the last 3 years. Took a Defensive driving course at the local Community College, went to court and they dropped the charge to improper equipment. I called two lawyers that sent letters and this way came out about $100 less than hiring a lawyer.

Well the Court cost and ticket cost 213 and some pennys, the Cheapest Lawyer I called said 395 for everything to be taken care of
And time from work isnt a problem (Im always on the clock).

don't forget to factor in increased insurance costs for the next I think its 3 years...you're better off paying the lawyer.

Yep, I got a ticket a few years back and hired a lawyer. It costs more up front, but it is well worth it! Plus, you don't have to screw with going to court. In Meck county that is a real hassle.

If you have a clean past then pull your own certified driving record from the dmv website, Take it to the DA's office and ASK if they will reduce it to whatever you need to avoid the insurance hit. I can't speak for the seat belt ticket but this worked for me in Carteret County on a 65 in a 50

i got a 95 in a 55 trooper wrote it and let me go, i went to court with my dad talked to the DA, stood before the judge, pleaded my case, (first offence, good kid yada yada) got it reduced to 69 to avoid insurance raises or whatever and that was that.......20 years later and it still shows up on my driving record!! got pre-arranged racing, reckless intent, destruction of public property,(doing donuts in Roses parking lot) several 20mph+ over fifty (I was pretty into the 5.0 fox body movement haha) always lawyered up and nothing else shows up on my record and no points insurance or otherwise had a 68 in a 55 and illeagal tint back in Dec and it went gone for $375 oh well its just money and i hate going through the courthouse mumbo jumbo and i can still see that mean ass judge sitting up there grillin me:(

scared to death!!!!!

Kind of Ironic that I posted on here yesterday as my 18 yo son got popped for 75 in a 55 @ 2am today. This really sucks as he is 2 weeks away from having 2 failure to maintain lane control charges wiped away along with fines and costs because his mom knows the DA and all he got was community service. This makes 3 moving violations in less than a year and I believe this could make him lose his license. The boy needs to stop learning the hard way !

Not sure if you last sentence, came out right, but looks like it IS, time, for him to Learn! Keep Mom out of it!:D

Thats the plan, he's on his own now and will have to deal with the consequences...:shaking:

I have a question. Let me preface with, no of fence to the OP, but how many times do we have to review this on the board? Speeding ticket threads seem to pop up about once a month on here.and it's the same question. Should I lawyer up? It's almost as bad "how much lift do I need to clear 31" tires?"

Come on guys!

xhowevermany on the lawyer.

And put on your damn seatbelt...
