THe speedo gear is on the transfer case. So as long as you maintain the same t-case, you should be good.

I could be wrong ,but I thought they(NP231s) all had the square end that goes into the speedo housing on the transfer case. You could check into gettin a GM speedo cable and see if it fits your YJ speedometer. Or check into Advance Adapters, they have alot of that stuff.
