spool or mini spool?

sounds like it would be a bit rough on the steering. but mini-spools are super cheap, so depends what you got.

wouldnt a limited slip, or selectable locker work better?

I would not run a spool or mini spool in the front without manual locking hubs (I assume by your name you are putting it in a Jeep XJ). I have an ezlocker in my dana 30 and it works just fine. I have no trouble out of it on the road at all.

I actually talked to a guy who runs a spool in his XJ and he said he has lost a lot of his turning radius now.

i'll answer for him and say yes, its a cherokee, but with waggy d44's and man. locking hubs.

i run a mini spool in a dana 44 front high pinion with 39 swampers and a mild built 302. with man locking hubs.clock your axles so they are the same way and it will steer ok.have had it for about 4 years and have broke 1 shaft and don't know how many universals.i also run stock axles.
thanks,
bryan

What 66Bronco forgot to add was that's he's short on patience and long on the pedal.
Also, his is a trailer queen:gay:
Just kidding Bryan!

If you're talking minispool in a front 44, I'd say don't do it. For the cost of a 44 minispool, you could add an extra $100 and buy a lunchbox locker. (and this is coming from someone that's run a spooled rear and welded front for 3 or 4 years. Soon I'll be adding a lock rite though since a spooled front end is really hard on parts, as well as hard to turn.

Then a spool should not even be noticed on the street with the hubs unlocked. You will break axles in 4wd though.

x2. lunchbox locker.

I run a mini-spool in the rear and it is already starting to deform after only a few runs. It is effective and simple but not the best by design. I would imagine a front spool would take a little less abuse than a rear but regardless, save your money for a lockright or detroit.

ive seen willnesses spool, it looks like it coulda got nasty. its a slightly different design than the one in my 9inch, i assume its a different design for the D44 too.

The 8.8 and 44's use the same 4 piece mini spool...but the weak link of any mini spool is the crosspin and carrier's strength. So that will be different for the two. The 9" uses a 1 piece mini spool since you can take the carrier out and split it in half...but if you use the stock crosspin, good luck getting it to last. The carrier likes to crack at the CP hole too...
A lock rite isn't going to go easier on any of these parts except for having a much stronger crosspin, stock parts aren't made for what we do.
