I currently run a lunch box locker in my 8.8. It seems common knowledge that the carrier is the weak link in an 8.8, so here is my question. Would a a full spool be a good idea in this axle, or should I save some more pennies and go with a detroit locker?

It is 90% trail, the other 10% is back and forth to the gas station and back and forth to the trail from the trailer.

I'd go with a spool based on where ya drive it. Just be careful in the rain and expect ur inner tire a squeal on a turn

I vote for spool and c-clip eliminator. Never did care for the Detroits I've had. However, I think the 8.8 carrier will do fine with the 35s you run! Bottom line, I'd do nothing right now :driver:

Spool for the little amount of street the rig will see.

I prefer the spool...i've run 2 of them so far in different jeeps and I dont mind them. They do wear the tires faster, but they are cheap and strong. Grandma's give you funny looks in parking lots:flipoff2: Mine sees a good bit of driving around town and to/from the trails. Thing i hate about detriots is it seems like when you break a shaft it usually take the locker out with it...that's a $500+ suck! :shaking:

Spool man you know you wanna be like me haha

I ran a spool with c clip eliminator on 38s and loved it!!!! trail only thou!!

Spool. Then spend the difference on the Super88 kit. It will beef up the shafts, eliminate the c-clips and widen the axle to same width as the D35.

I've posted pictures before on my fractured 8.8 LSD with a lunchbox locker. It was a DD so I went with a Detroit locker. Next trip to URE I broke the rear drive shaft. :(

I ran a spool in my Jeepster with a Dana 44 for a good while and liked it a lot, even with a good amount of street use. I now have a Currie 9" with a Detroit and I like ity just fine.
For your use Clay, go with the spool, you will like it just fine.

It is 90% trail, the other 10% is back and forth to the gas station and back and forth to the trail from the trailer.

based on this, I would say a spool should be fine.

I am actually having this same debate with myself and my heep.
If you do much more street driving than that, I think it would be worthwhile to get the detroit (which is the route that I am leaning towards)
