spot welding u-joint caps

just wanted to hear some differant opinions on spot welding caps im working on hp dana 30 with 760x joints and i want to know if it really helps as i dont like being stranded on a rock with the ball joints blown apart at sundown
I've broken a 760 joint with the caps welded and it still blew out the ball joints. The outer got trashed, but I really believe that having the caps tacked helped save the inner from being destroyed.

I blew the ears off both sides of a 30 shaft with a 760 sized joint, no balljoint damage...

I don't think welding would have made a difference.

So where'd the joint fail? If it failed at the trunion (the cross) then welding the caps didn't help or hurt you. If it still flung a cap then all that remains to be seen.

Something I found while looking at a Warn axle install sheet, always check for yoke clearance with aftermarket axles. This sheet said .060 at full steering lock.
Oh yeah, and don't mash on it with the wheels turned all the way. Drive like you know the limitations.

x2... your dealing with a d30, not a built 60.

also welding the caps is not the best, i'm sure a few will swear it may help, but ctm's or longs should be on your list, not welded caps on a joint imho

The joint failed in several different planes, including the trunion, but still broke the outer. All the caps were still in. THe outer broke (presumably) at the same time as the joint. The inner was unaffected. I didn't say for sure the caps being tacked in definitely helped. It just makes me feel better doing it on stock shafts.:flipoff2:

Not even. CTM's with stock 30 shafts? Really?

Welding the caps without a doubt adds strength to the shafts/ears and stops the problem of spitting caps. If you're still busting axles after that, then it's time to upgrade.
And stop using neapco/brute force/napa joints. They don't even compare to spicers.

Spot welds are good enough. If you put much of a weld on the cap, you'll melt out the grease and also melt the seals.

just thought id give an update to spot welding caps =so far their holding but my pass inner has streched the ears and and the weld has broke loose from the cap now the caps are rotating so its at the point of breaking . im trying to get some more shafts but for now im gonna have to pull em and tig around cap with the joint under water i cant afford chromos now due to blowing the budget on wifes mustang but that was a thorn that needed to get done

I'm assuming you guys are talking about tacking the cap to the yoke, right?
