Been shopping for a four door tow rig, found a low mileage truck that I wanted to go look at. The supplied Carfax shows the truck has spent its entire life (13 years) in PA.....I asked for undercarriage pictures, because I do not do rust (been there, done that). The dealer claims it is rust free and was undercoated by the original owner.

It is a 3 hour one way trip, otherwise I would eyeball it myself.

What do you guys think, been burned a lot lately, I think I am looking at lipstick on a pig.....but maybe I am too bitter.

Did they send you pictures? If so, post em up. If not, steer clear.

Stoopid Google drive failed me....they should be attached.

I would never buy a truck from the North, PERIOD.

Are those pics current condition or when it was first done? Looks too new for the condition of the muffler & wheel well lip to me...

id ask for pictures of the inside of the frame rails, underside of bed and cab. you know where they gotta crawl under it on their back to see whats going on.

So it looks really solid, but that is also a fresh paint job. Look at the paint on the muffler.

With that said, based on the pictures, it's worth going to look at. I don't see anything shaky or flaky.

That is also frame pictures, the main part is where the body attaches to the frame. And that is a recent coverup. I've always been told that unless you take it to have it done before it ever sees rain or salt, you are just covering up rust. My grandfather had a truck he bought brand new with 7 miles on it, took it straight to the coating shop and had the whole thing rustproofed and in 5 years it was rusted still.

Being from PA, I will never buy a car from PA ever again.

Yeah, I noticed the overspray on the muffler and the shocks. It does look clean, but I am a rust snob and I don't like buying flips of any sort........the dealer down the road has a HUGE inclined ramp that they drive used vehicles up so they can stand underneath them and spray bomb the underside......
On a side note, in my recent searching, I have noticed a lot of northern state vehicles finding their way down here....seems them northeners have a knack for keeping vehicles and keeping the mileage low (1 owner, low miles).

I think it is because they can buy them cheaper and most people down here don't think about the rust. Up North they buy vehicles from down here because people actually check for rust. One of my friends used to haul cars from Jersey down to GA and then pick up a load of cars there and take them back to NJ, twice a week.

Looks like a Dodge, but if it were a Cheverlet, that's the factory installed rocker rust.

Yup....it's a dodge! Been looking for a proper crew cab to replace my club cab......but 4x4 3/4t truck and 4 door truck prices have gone CRAZY.... the two cheapest Ram 2500 trucks I have found with 4 doors were $6k+.....one was parked in a field because it was rusted all to hell, and didn't currently run....the other looked to have less rust, but the transmission was currently out of it.

WTH is going on with truck prices? I would sell mine....but then I wouldn't be able to afford a replacement!

Guy in Smithfield was telling me today that truck & camper prices have sky rocketed lately since people are going camping for the first time & want a 3/4ton & 30' bumper pull for a long weekend getaway once a year. No idea if that holds water, but it might? Of course he's biased & bitter since a PT cruiser side-swiped him on I-95S & he ended up with a totaled F250 & camper on its side facing North by the time he came to a stop.

I grew up in Pa. and remember before salt. The price consumers pay for wet roads in the winter is incredible. It quickly destroys the metal our cars are built from. It causes extensive damage to steel bridges and migrates into concrete rusting the rebar in highways. I was saddened to see it used here. I recently went on the hunt for a newer Suburban. I looked at a few with rust and one had been sort of painted underneath to cover the rust. One part that never gets painted but is a pretty good indicator of salt exposure is the driveshaft. I know a lot of them are aluminum so then look further at the fuel line fittings. The lines are coat but the fittings seem to rust quickly.

Run ..... all that purdy paint is hiding sumptin'.

No - those are just the ones you see for sale.
You're not going to see all the high mileage ones that have rusted to pieces.

Been there, done that! Grew up in the rust belt....I have seen cars rust to nothing in very short order. My home state doesn't even title cars over 15 years old because there aren't many that make it that long.

Just seems like the low mileage stuff I have found lately is all rusty POS.....I will deal with some rust if it is super cheap.....but I won't pay a premium for said rust!
