I had great luck with the rust-oleum primer and enamel spray paint. Recently I have had alot of issues with it cracking and flaking off. I thought it was an issue with the metal being clean. So I've started taking it to bare metal and cleaning it with mineral spirits before I sprayed primer. That didn't work. So I went with the just primer on the mill scale. Still same thing is occurring.

Have they changed their formula or just a bad batch?

Is there another brand you have had success with?

Big fan of the bucket and brush method, can't hardly tell a difference.

We sell a lot of rust oleum to a fab shop and as of late they are having issues as well. Lots of fish eyes and cracking.

They are using the tried and true quarts and brushes as well now.

I primarily use the oil based rustoleum brush on. Great stuff

One of the major aerosol resin plants in the US shut down early last year due to extensive damage from a devastating explosion. In the middle of the pandemic with supply chain issues at every turn the paint industry had to reformulate their tried and true aerosol lines quickly, and I believe what you are seeing now is a result of that.

I have had decent luck with the Krylon Multi-Surface rattle cans.

However, most of my stuff is a year or so old. I have not bought any recent rattle cans.

Have been using the Rustoleum Industrial with the mega nozzle... all well so far, but now wondering if it sat on the local shelf and was pre-panicdemic?

I've used Rustoleum for over a decade, specifically, "Smoke Gray" and some semi gloss black, all in spray bomb cans. Once, I used the same color out of a can, and rolled it on. I wasn't too happy with that at all. Seems once back from a wheelin' trip, When I went to wash my Jeep, a lot of the rolled stuff flaked off. Maybe because of the lack or enough prep. So I stuck with the spray cans. At the moment, I am stripping the pain off most of the sides, down to bare metal. In other words, all of the area's that get scrapped and scrubbed while out doing what it's supposed to be doing. Before every trip, I would touch up the scratches and scrubs. So doing this for over a decade of doing that, it was looking pretty rough. In my town, I had 4 sources for my color, Smoke Gray, Ace Hardware, Rural King, Tractor Supply, and Lowes Hardware. None was to be found, so, I wasn't sure what I was going to do. I thought I might have to change the color. So, My son found some of what I needed on Amazon. He got me a whole case, 6 cans. Now, after readying this thread I am wondering if I will run into the same issues. Gee, Thanks guys!

Try the Rustoleum Self-Etching primer - it sets the piece up for better paint adherence. I use it for both aluminum and steel, no flaking problem with the paint.
