I've done allot of surfing and fact finding about jeeps lately. And in allot of descriptions for springs and lifts I see where there are several guys that have removed the clamps around the leafs on the rear of jeeps (usually explaining that they did it for more travel)

Do you GET more travel?

Do you take off JUST the clamp holding the back half of the rear spring?

Is there any negatives about doing this?

I'm not overly concerned about doing this to my new springs, but I was just curious as to why others have done this.

Does this give you SOMEWHAT of the same effect as revolver shackles?

Are revolver shackles much better?

Yes, you get more travel. I don't like revolver because of the unloading effect they can have. if you just straighten out the clamps you will get same travel as if you remove, but they will stay in lone better. But the can still wander side to side. you can fix this by making a clamp out of some flat steel and a couple bolts, clamp as near to the spring perch as you can and it keeps the springs in line, but allows full droop. Your springs will loose some of their lift by unclamping them. since they will stretch and bend more than they were designed to

If you remove the clamps the springs will fan out , If you do that you will wish you hadn't!been there done that!!! mine fanned out and bent the main leaf. bad idea. everyone I've known that had revolvers have removed them for one reason or another, like chip said they will unload the suspension when you least expect it.

Scott, fan out, yeah thats what I was trying to say but just not in the right words. Thats where the clamps I describe work, and work well. Two short peices of bar drilled so the outside of each bolt going through( looks like a shackle) touch the top and bottom of the springs. mounted close to the springperch/plate as possible. This will keep the springs inline.

Here is what I have for clamps.
I guess you could call them "guides" as they don't really clamp anything, but they do keep the springs from fanning out.

Pics are clicky for F/S view.

Originally I was going to put a bolt and sleeve in the top holes to limit the droop somewhat, never got "a round tuit" - and it always worked fine, so I left it alone.

Funny thing. I just went out to get these pics and the first spring I looked at - there wasn't any clamp on it. WTF ?!?!?

Looks like I knocked one off somewhere along the way.
Hmmm - wonder how long I been running like that?!?!?
