We're getting about 130 ft of fence installed today.
I'm not one for fancy things, it's in the back yard - but I don't want it to look like shit in 5 years.
What's the best sealer/stain these days that I won't have to be out there redoing again anytime soon?
I've helped several friends stain decks w/ the crap from HD and (1) it just looks bad and (2) never seems to last long. I'm assuming a good oil vs water base.

Also - yeah this is a shatty time to be out staining a fence. Does it matter I wait until a warmer dry day in say March?

We bought some deck stain for our front porch a few weeks ago hoping to get it done. Instructions say have to have 72 hours straight above 50*. Somebody was telling me yesterday there is a new variation that you can apply down to 32 degrees, don't know what brand...but he said it was crap. More solvents, less solids to make it work in the cold.

Assuming it's treated, wait till this summer. It is so wet with treatment that it will weep through the first Spring.
that's kinda what I was assuming.

Oil stain, any major brand is good. Solids and semi-solids are typically water based and while good in some applications, fencing isn't a great place for them. We usually use Cabot oil based stain on fencing and Sherwin Williams DeckScape or SuperDeck if solids are the plan.

I bought the best stuff they had at lowes, it's a limited lifetime warranty, I damn near had to get a second mortgage to afford it at $50 a gallon.
