My brother just pulled the tranny out of his YJ to replace the front seal and is debating on going back with a higher(than stock) stall converter. How much stall is to much? What's a good range to stay in? He mainly uses it for Uwharrie but does occasionally drive it on the street. It's a stretched yj on tons w/5.13's, mild/stock tbi 350, 350 auto, 205 case running 42 tsl's. Thanks in advance.

I try to run as large a diameter stall as possible on a crawler for fluid capacity. I would stay with the advertised 1800 to 2400 rpm 11" to 12" diameter. The higher the stall the more slippage occurs before full engagement thus the more heat it builds. There are others on here a lot more experienced than I and maybe they will chime in but this has worked good for me with similar setups.

i try to explain this to a lot of people. you don't want high stall unless you are in mud. for any other wheeling you want the lowest stall possible. there is no need to have to get your rpm's up in the 2500-3000 range to make power, by then your getting wheel spin and makes crawling near impossible

not necessarily. depends on cam choice and gearing too. too low of a stall allows the rig to possibly push through the brakes. I was running a 2200 stall in mine and hated it. wanted to push through the brakes in low range and was slightly sluggish when launching in high range.

running a 2700 stall now and love it. huge difference in performance. been wheelin in 90* weather and beating on the trans and temps were good all day.

thanks to everyone for the info and responses.
