I hate paying unneccessary usage taxes and fees, but they got me again. I went to the DMV to get a title signed over to me. the cashier didnt say anything, but as I was writing the check out, i said that sounds kind of high ($86.50 for a '89 YJ, no tags, title only). She says "no, that includes the $15 late fee." Grrrr..."it says right here on the title, must be transferred within 28 days." I dont have any plans to put this on the road (as an 89 YJ  ), so I was in no real hurry. My time expired Dec 19. Now I know, hope this helps else who didnt know.

Why is it their business when I register a vehicle? Can a person not just own anything anymore?

I didnt register anything, just got the title transferred to me.

ehh that rule jas been there for quite some time....i thought it was common knowledge.
hey, ya gotta learn common knowledge sometime, I wasnt born with it. I'm just passing the word on.

it's all about money.
They chareg you a nice fee to get that title. They want their money now!
Otherwise you might wait 6 months, then sell te hcar and never bother to title it... then they'd lose out on their $60.

You're lucky, in MD it's > $110 just to title a vehicle that's > 7yrs old. Newer = open the checkbook....

My Grandfather signed a title over to my dad in 1975 notarized and all but Dad never sent the title off. Dad died in '98 and I thought I would have alot of trouble getting it in my name so I waited till 2000 to worry about getting it in my name. Lady at the DMV said since it was willed to me through Dad it would be no problem but I would have to pay a late fee. I'm like OMG!! Twenty-five years of late fees I'll just junk the old truck. Turned out whether you were one day late over the 28 days or 9125 days it was still the same late fee. I was kinda relieved!!

I registered my Jeep early 08. I bought it in Jan. 07.... They didnt say anything to me about the late fee (and I saw it in fine print). The funny thing is I guess they were going to charge me but I had another vehicle already registered. When they asked if I had been driving it I said no (I drove it to the DMV ). I also had a Bill Of Sale for the amount I actually paid and then a mock of BOS for a few thousand less to beat the tax. Still ended up paying $350 in taxes on a 2000 wrangler. I thought there was some kinda price cap?!? I didnt know they take 10% off the total value of the vehicle. If i knew this, I would have made the BOS for $1k... They got me this time around....

I traded my wifes toyota matrix for my parents GMC Envoy, we had to transfer the tags and title from georgia to NC (mind you in georgia this is a $18-$22 process) walked out of the DMV $594.00 lighter. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!!! In case someone thought I stuttered, I said $594.00. There should be a sign at the state line, Welcome to North Carolina you're fixing to be broke.
***Hey NC DMV this ones for you:fuck-you:***

Up in CT, we used to use the bogus BOS too, but that doesnt fly in NC. The state sets the highway use tax by year and model, I guess their values are below blue book or whatever. I paid $40 Title, 31.50 HUT, $15 late fee. I thought the HUT was capped at $300, but add tags and title, that starts getting pricey. I've never re-tagged a vehicle in NC, I bet they add some sales tax on top of the HUT too...that's why I don't drive anything that appraises high.

you got hosed, in state title transfers between immediate family do not have to pay the taxes, you'd of only had to pay the 60 or so title fee!

They got me last yr when I thought I had the LJ sold and did not relize it was sign into my name buy the people I got it from! Went to put it into my name 156.00 Title ONLY! I asked if that was right and she said yes they charge more for the OLDER car now they do not have to be inspected! Long story short I still have the LJ for sale!

If memory serves me, it should be $65 per car/truck etc, that includes the registration to put normal plates on it, weighted and/or vanity plates will add $$
