With the continuing strength of the dollar http://m.wsj.com/articles/investors-see-reasons-to-jump-into-u-s-markets-1412115553?mobile=y I thought this is a great map to show just how much financially stronger we are from the rest of the world. Who would have thought that South Carolina makes as much GDP as Kuwait.

Mods how do I make the link just say "dollar"?

Any chance there are actual numbers? I'd like to see it as a percentage of US GDP.

Hm, maryland = columbia... pretty fitting... both run by a bunch a crooks.

Yeah, but I'm lazy and was hoping you would do it for me

Here's 2009 when total U.S. GDP was 14 Trillion. It's not by percentage but does rank each state and has individual state GDPs so you can do the math :)

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_GDP

Today's GDP is 17 Trillion and fun fact of the day: Vermont is our lowest producing state at $25 Billion per year. That is still more than twice of North Korea's.

Take that Gimp Jong-un!

It's amazing at how much we as Americans complain about how bad our economy is because of ____________________ (fill in your favorite cause here - Obama, Bush, Republican, Democrat.... ). When you look at raw numbers like these and think of what the American view of poverty is versus the rest of the world, it's pretty eye opening.

I bet that some of these countries GDP would be dwarfed by just what Americans throw away. We get tired of our cell phones and want the latest gadget, so we go get it. Heck, just what an individual pays for a data plan is more than many families around the world make in a month.

Agreed, but we create more problems and a stressful life for ourselves because of it. They were playing a video at my church last year about the upcoming mission trip to Ethiopia, and how we were going to go help those people by bringing them small business skills and the internet, and it really struck a chord with me because I have those things and often wish I just farmed and lived off the land with my family and community. Grass is greener I guess.

Our church regularly sends missions crews to Burkina Faso and one of the things that I took away from the missionary speaker was him telling us how missionary teams that get sent there have to be debriefed afterwards to get them back accustomed to American life. Ironically, after they see how these people can be so joyful with so little, team members will often get depressed when they go back to their "comfortable lives" and see the wastefulness that the American dream often creates. Many come back with a renewed spirit thankfulness for what they come home to - which is good, though. Either way, people are rarely the same after they see cultures such as these.

You can go to Pigeon forge about any time of any day and Tanger will be packed out and they are always building new restaurants and remodeling hotels.Hard for me to believe theres a bad economy.

I didnt have to go to one of those countries to see that.I saw it just goin to Europe.Ice and a/c meant more than I realized.

It really convicted me watching a video about clean drinking water in Burkina Faso and other areas of Africa. At that point, I was working for Ecolab selling water filtration units to restaurants that were installed on ice machines. Here we are installing a filtration system that will filter out to the half micron water that is already treated at a municipal water facility in order to give customers the most perfectly clean ice cubes and I'm watching these people in Burkina scooping dirty water out of a field in hopes that they don't die of thirst. Just something wrong with that.

I felt the same way when I got back from Iraq. Went back to working construction in $300,000+ houses. The greed of some of those people made me sick.
