How hard is it top rebuild the steering gearbox on my '92 Suburban? I remember the last time I had it aligned, the guy said the worm gear was pretty worn out. It's got quite a bit of play in the steering wheel and a $25 re-build kit looks alot better than a $200+ dollar box.
TIA:beer:

that $25 kit comes with a new worm and sector shaft ? And sector shaft bushings ? I highly suspect you're getting no more than seals and "O"-rings for that price.

THe worm is a machined steel part, as is the sector shaft (sector is what the pitman are swings on) the bushing in the housing is brass/bronze usually.

IF you want to stop the leaks, you should at minimum replace the sector shaft bushing in the housing, but I would suspect your alignment dude isn't far off on the worn worm.

Replace the box, save yourself some aggrivation of doing it twice.

the worse part is that there are no leaks...it's just worn out

Thanks Kevin, for the heads up

:driver:-hopefully without all the slop

You can adjust the slop to an extent.... Undo the 5/8 jam nut on the top of the aluminum cap... Turn the allen headed screw clockwise while someone moves the wheel back and forth... Just a few turns should tighten the box right up... This is what I would do if its not leaking too bad, or if its only leaking by the pitman arm... This helps tighten up that seal as well..

The box IS NOT leaking...it's the worm gear that is worn out. There is no more adjusting to be done.
