Steinbrenner dies

Holy cow...I'm a BoSox fan, but it's sad to see a staple of the game gone. I think everyone was placed and groomed accordingly and the Yanks won't be hurting too badly.

From 1973 to 1982 I ate the exact same lunch everyday. Turkey chili in a bowl made out of bread. Bread bowl George. First you eat the chili then you eat the bowl. There's nothing more satisfying than looking down after lunch and seeing nothing but a table.

The only thing good about Steinbrenner was his character on Seinfeld.
That guy was a cancer to the game of baseball, I'm not sad at all he's dead.

like him or not he was big name in the sport and bad or good i see the loss of a big name of the game to be a sad day.
RIP

How exactly was he a cancer to the game? I'm failing to see how winning is a cancer. He ruled with an iron fist, do you think Jerry Jones, Mark Cuban, Al Davis, etc. as cancers to their sports? And I'm a BoSox fan defending ol' George.

I liked him because he gave a shit about one thing and one thing only, WINNING. Every other team could have done what he did but didnt beacsue they wanted to keep all the $$$. George spent it like a drunken sailor with the sole goal on putting the absolute best damn team he could on the field, money be damned.

He brought the era of big money into baseball, and that is the reason the game is so lopsided now. You have teams who consistently can't compete because they don't have any money, and you have these guys commanding huge money because they know if they are good enough, the Yankees will buy them.

Baseball needs a salary cap, and purely because of people like ol' Georgie.

I hate when teams go out and buy a team, and the Yankees do this year after year.

I'll agree that there needs to be a cap, but there is a soft cap in place, kinda like in the NBA, where if they go over that cap, they get penalized and pay fees. Anyway...I think recent history will show it's not about the salaries anyway, take a look at the Marlins a few years ago, or the Rays now...or the Tigers a few years ago. There are plenty of teams that are routinely on the bottom for salaries but are the top of their division. I'll agree the prima donna's are an issue, but it's not Steinbrenner's fault there isn't a so called cap. He works within the system, what's the big deal. It would be like someone calling you a cancer to your industry because you're a vendor on NC4x4, so you attract more sales...so your competitors can't compete. I doubt you'd appreciate anyone taking that approach. Not to mention, the reason the salaries are so inflated is because of the fans, the fans are willing to pay the ticket prices, watch the games, buy the merchandise...the players aren't stupid, they realize they bring the fans, and not the owners...so why not enjoy the fruits of their labors. It was bound to happen, the sports world is out of control IMO, and I don't think George affected the NFL, NBA or NHL. And the MLB union is so strong, there's not much that can change the current setup. Unlike other sports where the power is in the hands of the owners. That said, I think it's really unfair to pin the problems of baseball on a dead man and in poor taste to disrespect a death like that, much less one of an icon.

I pinned the problems on him long before he was dead. I'm not going to change my opinion of a man just because he's dead.

Out of everything I said, that's the only thing you'll respond to? I think it's erroneous you pinned any of that on him at any point. Anything you mentioned in your last post was flat out false, except that the Yankee's are willing to put up big money. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I never understood how someone just didn't like someone for the sake of not liking someone...especially if they never even met.

So what if he brought money in to baseball, if he didn't do it, someone else would have, because it sure as hell happened in other sports that George had nothing to do with.

False...Every year there are teams that compete for at least their division that have bottom basement payrolls.

and you have these guys commanding huge money because they know if they are good enough, the Yankees will buy them.

False...The players play, they bring in the money...why shouldn't they demand more. John Kaase can build a 460 better than I can, and people want to learn from him...should he only expect to charge what I would?

Baseball has a soft cap, if a team goes over that, they're penalized. Every team has that option.

Sure the Yankee's buy teams, but they won 7 World series titles in 30 years...better than average...but that says they didn't win 23 others.

FWIW...I'm not trying to personally attack you or turn this into a debate, I just don't see/understand your perspective and seeing if I overlooked something. Maybe it's because I've been around that world since I was a little boy, so I'm jaded.

Whether you love him or you hate him either he was to has a family that is morning his death right now. He has a wife and children just many of you do. SHOW SOME RESPECT THEN MOVE ON!!!

Ben, I agree with absolutely nothing you said, and didn't want to start a debate in this thread. That's why I didn't argue any. After cars, baseball is my second love. I've played all my life, even named my oldest son after the Phillies second baseman. I am a purist, plain and simple.

Now carry on, nothing to see here.

:)

Being a purist, I can understand. Now I will let this die, but I don't see how you can't agree with what I said, everything I said in my last post was based on fact. Being a purist is cool and all, but times change and evolve...do you apply that purist perspective to wheeling and cars as well? Or do you modify them?

Phillies fan huh? Purist? You mean the same Phillies team w/ the 4th highest payroll in baseball :flipoff2:

Hell...I dunno how you can claim to be a purist and enjoy anything passed tball these days, much less the Phillies, or the Marlins for that matter (lowest payroll in the league). Kids are being offered scholarships in middle school...a scholarship is just following the money...aka unpure. So how and when does this purity get applied? Or was it a convenient excuse to dislike Steinbrenner, because there's surely no purity left passed high school.

Hey man...I would like to apologize for attacking you the way I did. I had something stuck up my ass all day and it wasn't right to do what I did. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and formulate them as they see fit. So I figure if I can publicly attack you the way I did, I should be man enough to publicly apologize. So I hope you take this as an olive branch and we can move forward with no hard feelings.
